What is the difference between P228 and P229? Is P228 still in production or is it defunct?

From my understanding...

P228 has stamped slide and is available only in 9mm. It is still in production for civilians and as M11 for US military.

P229 has forged stainless slide and is available in 357Sig and 40S&W. I have heard that 229 is available in 9mm too but I have never seen one personally.

Hope this helps.

The P229 is available in 9mm. I shot one at the range the other day. Nice little gun.

229's in 9mm must not be very popular. I've only seen 2. Bought one.

SIG Arms mills the slides from a block of stainless steel. I saw one at the local shop, it looks just like any other P229 except for the caliber markings. :)

The 229 in 9mm may not be that popular because if you buy it in .40, you can buy a .357 sig barrel, use the same magazine, and now have a gun that fires two different calibers. I don't believe you can do that with the 9mm version.

On a side note, the agency I work for issues the Sig 229 in 9mm w/ trijicons.

The P229 slide, is also different, dimensionally from the P228. Some holsters made for the P226/P228 will not fit a P229 because of the ridge of metal on the other side of the slide rails.
