Kind of thinking about a mid-size 9mm single stack pistol. I'm not fond of the really short butted guns as I have fairly big hands and like a full three finger grip. S/W 39 and Sig 225 come to mind immediatly. Any other suggestions???

You can't go wrong with the SIG.

For a single stack DAO gun the 39** series guns are excellent.
The 239 is an excellent gun also but I like the S&W better....I can't make the Smitty fit my hand with the Hogue. I can do that with the Sig. Kahrs T" series is right up there also.....just what you want. Shoot well

Are any of the Beretta Compacts single stack?

Shmackey, yeah I can't remember if it's the L or M model thats single stack. Too big a paws for that one though. My pinky even dangles a bit on a G-19.

I know I said mid-size which is a bit of a misnomer because I'm from the old school that 5" is full size and 4" is a mid size. Now it seems that 4" is considered to be a full size auto in most makes

The new S&W 3913TSWs have full-length (8-round magazine) grips. I don't know how'd they do with your hands though--you'd probably have to look at putting a curved backstrap or aftermarket grip on it (they come with straight backstrap grips). The 225 (and 228) are the best Sig makes for my money.

STAR UltraStar, maybe the BEST Compact 9mm ever made.

SiG 225, like pulling Excalibur from the stone, as a friend says.

Of all of the compact 9's I own, the STAR UltraStar is far and away the best choice. You should be able to find a new one under $300.00 and it will really surprise you. It was designed for concealed carry and all of the controls are rounded and recessed so that nothing catches or snags. It uses the slide inside the frame design similar to what SiG uses on their P-210 target pistol.

The 225 would have the advantage of having the same manual of arms as your 220. This is an important consideration because during that SHTF situation there will be no hesitation or mistakes because controls are located in a different place. My 225 is almost as accurate as my STAR and feels great in the hand.

The 225 will be more expensive than the STAR and also about 5 ounces heavier since ithe STAR uses a polymer frame. The barrel axis on the STAR is considerably lower than the SiGs which reduces percieved lift and improves return to point of aim.

Last year I picked up a slightly used Smith & Wesson 439 for just $315. It had about 98% of its original finish and I just could not pass it up. Accuracy wise, it is so-so with some ammo, but with Federal 115 gr JHP's it is great and is almost as good with Remington 115 gr JHP +P. Trigger is typical S&W early auto pistol, heavy double action, decent single action. Many years ago I had a S&W model 39-2, it wasn't accurate with anything. I understand that the current crop of Smiths have better triggers and more consistent accuracy.

Thanks for the ideas, actually I kind of like the 39 and S/W's later autos (got a 4006 I'm very happy with). Always heard thier earlier auto's had problems though.

Stans,

I'm not familiar with the 439 was it a follow-up to the 39? Differnces?? Any other models in later generations following the same basic layout???

The 439 was the "second generation" reiteration of the Model 39. The "second generation" was relatively short-lived being replaced by the current "third generation" of which the 3904/06 (both dropped) were the Model 39 equivalent. (Actually, though I suppose the "third generation" has been replaced by the TSW series which does not have a real Model 39 equivalent, but the current 3913TSW is close.)

and for somthing really different, you could look into getting the hk p7 (m8 is single stack, m13 is the double)

about the same size as the sig 225 (p6) and walter p5 but with a full 4" barrel like the smith 39/439/3904

S&W 908 - 9mm, single stack, flat, excellent CCW weapon, not too expensive ($300 + or -), a little less used if you can find them. Shoots nice. ;)

HK P7M8 (really single action, but some consider it DA since you have to squeeze the cocking device.

Walther P-5 or P-5c. Slick DA/SA single stack 9MM.

Sig 225. Same as above.

The HK is the most interesting of the bunch, but they all work well.

WOW! DuckMan, my friend-

The two choices you listed in the begining are really
nice choices. I can't see a person going wrong with
either! Even though I'm very fond of Sig's; my heart
lies with the S&W model 39-2, cuz it was the very
first 9m/m I ever owned!:D  :)

Best Wishes,

Hey Dan :)

Wish the selections at the show I went too matched your enthusiasim for my selections. I totally struck out. $650+permit in pocket, 350 tables and not one model 39, 439, 228, or 225 to be had for any price:(

Oh well another show later this month, maybe better luck then...

Kahr K9.

Not exactly "double action" as it is striker fired, but an excellent handgun none the less.
