M1 rifle, right?
AR-15, right?
M1911A1, right?

So...

M14 or M-14?

M1A or M1-A?

M16 or M-16?

M-16A2? M-16-A2? M16A2?

What's considered "correct" nomenclature here?

Well, stamped on the side of my Colt is M16A1. So at least for that one the manufacturer says no hyphen. :)

It doesn't really matter. People will know what you are talking about no matter how 'hyphened-out' it is. :)

For US military nomenclature, there should technically be no hyphen.

M1911A1
M1
M1927A1
M1A1
M14
M16A2
M79

The same holds true for Heckler & Koch "official" numbering:

MP5A4
MP5SD6
G36K
G3A3

Correct on both U.S. and current German. No hyphen or period. But German usage in WWII and earlier was to use the abbreviation of the weapon type, followed by a period. So:

P.08 (Pistole 1908, the Luger)
P.38 (Pistole 1938)
G.43 (Gewehr 1943 or "Rifle" 1943)
K.98k (Karabiner 98 kurz or "Carbine 1898 short")
MG.42 (Maschinengewehr or "Machine rifle" 1942)

On the Springfield version of the M14, since no one answered this one, its M1A as well.

No hypen officially -- cool! Thank you!

Let's not even get into the British usage of *. :)

And how many different ways have you seen "Caliber .30, Model 1906" labeled?

.30'06
.30-06
.30-'06
.30/06
.30/'06
30/06
"Thirty-Aught-Six"
'06

And of course, countless models of ammo. ;)

Of course we should not forget the AR-15 and the M16 depending on who Colt is making the rifle for on a particular day. Are-we-confused-yet?:)

Long,

I've got rounds in my cartridge collection with the following stampings for .30-06..

.30 US Gov't, 1906

.30 Gov't 06

.30 Springfield

All are old.

Around 1957 or -58, I bought up all the elderly and partial boxes of .30'06 (my personal favorite designation) ammo in my great uncle's hardware store in southern Oklahoma.

In addition to some of the above, I had .30USG1906 and .30SPFLD06--The latter may have been .30-SPFLD-1906. Anyway, the headstamp included caliber and model year, separated by abbreviated "Springfield."

Oh, yeah, some .30-USG-1906.

Wish I had some of that ammo, and, of course, the original boxes, now.

I shot it all up in a DCM '03A3 rifle. I left tears and nasal secretions on that short-stocked, steel-buttplated, rifle. My first center-fire!:)

Best,
Johnny

Heck, I wish you still had the rifle, too, J.G. ;)
