I have a few questions about the used Model 29 I get to pick up in a week or so.
1. Is there any way to tell how old it is? The serial is N371XXX. Does the age change it's value? 2. Which frame is this? I would like to order some new wood grips and perhaps some rubber ones, but don't know the different frame sizes. THANKS |

All Model 29s are N frames.

The serial number will give you the approximate date. It has to be compared against a master list. Let me get home this evening and I'll look it up for you.
A quick & dirty way to tell if it is pre- or post-1983 is that pre-83 guns had the barrel pinned in place, and the cylinder was counterbored so that the cartridges sat flush with the rear of the cylinder. The 29 is an N-frame. ------------------ Smith & Wesson is dead to me. If you want a Smith & Wesson, buy USED! |

Some guy on the *&* forum just posted that my pistol was made in 75-77. Does this change the value (I paid $450 - Magnaports and custom trigger job, drilled for scope, near new condition)? Are the mechanics of the pistol as sound as those made today? Does it shoot as well? To put my concerns in perspective, I was BORN in 75...

Does it change the value? No. Condition is the big variable.
It's only when you get back into guns made in the late 1950s/early 60s (during the transition from 5 to 4 to the current 3 screws) when the value starts to fluctuate depending on the number of screws that are in the frame. Mechanically and structurally the pistol is fine. ------------------ Smith & Wesson is dead to me. If you want a Smith & Wesson, buy USED! |

Smith & Wesson used to have a feature on their web site where you could submit a serial number and find out the exact production date of your gun.
