opinions on Federal lightning .22lr ammo?

Did a search but didn't get a lot of info on this ammo. It's on sale this week for $7/500rds. It's primarily going to be used in bolt action .22 rifles, with occasional use in a .22 semi pistol.

Opinions good, bad, or indifferent appreciated.

Note to mods: I meant to put this in general discussion, since it covers both rifle and pistol use of this ammo. I can't delete it, so please put this thread there.

bastiat: I recently ran several brands/types of .22LR ammo through my new Ruger 77/22 bolt action rifle to see which shot best. The Federal Lightning won hands down. Very accurate in my rifle. Been buying the 500 round boxes here for $7.90 so you have a good price there.

Used to shoot alotta the stuff, never had a problem with it. Where are you getting it for $7? For that matter, where is it $7.90?

I bought quite a few bricks of it to use for the kids, newbies, etc so as to not waste my other ammo. I've had a couple that did not fire, but not many. Seem pretty good. I bought well over $200 of .22 ammo from www.cheaperthandirt.com but will make my next order from natchez (sp?).

Where did you find this for 70c/box? I paid .88c !!!

I get my new Mark II next week and need to spend the rest of my tax rebate on either another gun or ammo. Matter of principle you know.

Finding really bad .22lr ammo is pretty hard these days. I've shot a fair amount of Federal ammo and found it to be pretty decent and pretty clean compared to Remington.(I'm convinced Remington uses floor sweepings and black powder in their Thunderbolts).

Ditto the where for $7/brick?

My general supply of .22lr ammo is down to under 20K rounds, and I feel like I'm on empty.

Lightnings

Local Walmart carries them at $7.90 per brick all the time. Great stuff for rifle plinking and handguns all the time. For serious bench work I usually go up a couple notches to Fed. 711b or 900.

Gander mountain has a sale this week - 8.90 per brick with at $2.00 mail in rebate. At $6.90 per brick I picked up two. I'll have to see how they work this week.

The Federal ammo that Wally World sell for less than 10 bucks in a bulk packed box of 550 rounds is some darned good stuff. It's a great deal and the hollowpoint ammo is clean and surefire. They also sell the Remington bulk packed ammo in 550 round boxes but I have heard of people having problems with it.
