Shotgun ammo question
Hi All,
On the box of Winchester Ammo I bought, the specs read: 12 Guage/ 2 3/4 Inches/ 3 1/4 Dr. EQ/ 1 Oz./ 8 Lead Shot What does the Dr. Eq, 1 0z. and 8 Lead Shot represent. Thanks for sharing your knowledge as I'm still new to shotguns. Joe |

The dram equivalent is pretty useless as it is a reference to an equivalent load with black powder. The other means that you have one ounce or was it an ounce and a quarter of size 8 shot.

Shotshell Data
To answer your question:
12 Gauge = obviously the gauge of the shell 2 3/4 inches = the length of the shotshell hull AFTER FIRING. Verry important to know the chamber length of your gun. Chamber length is the length after the shell is fired. 3 1/4 dram equivalent = a measure of the velocity of the shot charge when it leaves the barrel. Throwback to blackpowder days when blackpowder was measured in drams. Dram equivalent has a direct relation to weight of the shot charge and the muzzle velocity. Ex a three dram equivalent powder load pushes a 1 1/8 oz shot load at 1200feet per second. This gets complicated. Get an Alliant, Hogdgon or other powder reloaders guide and study the different shot charges. A 3 1/4 dram load pushes a 1 oz shot charge at 1290fps. 1 OZ is the weight of the shot charge 8 lead shot = shot charge consists of #8 shot (see shot chart in post above) and the shot is lead shot (as opposed to steel etc) Geoff Ross
