Woohoo I shot handguns today for the first time and they weren't even mine!

I just have to share my good news that I shot a Glock 19, a Hi-Standard .22, a Colt Gov't 1911A1, and a Norinco 1911A1, and I loved it! AND THIS IS IN CANADA! I get to shoot my own pistols in a week or so. The Glock was a friend's, but the others were from very kind strangers who offered while I was shooting my rifles. What a great couple of guys. It's damn fun.

I was under the impression that handguns were illegal in Canada...or is it just certain models that were illegal?

Only "full-sized" pistols are legal for anyone, because why would you want to target shoot with a mousegun? (Target shooting is the only legitimate reason to own a handgun in Canada, unless you're an "armed guard") Seriously, unless you owned one prior to 1994(?), you cannot own .25's, .32's, or anything with a barrel 105 mm(4 1/8") or under. So new handgunners basically get to shop in the "service pistol" size, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing. I bought a Ruger P89, a Ruger MkII Target, and a Colt/Ithaca 1911A1 .45 to start my collection. The two mousegun calibres were banned because the gummint said they were too concealable, which was also the reasoning behind the min. barrel length. In Canada, we grandfather the owner instead of the gun, which amounts to AGE DISCRIMINATION! In effect, the people are "preban"! LOL. Oh yeah, I had to pass a CCW-like safety test to apply for my firearms license, which took about 8 weeks to get after passing the test. Hope this clears some things up for you Yanks.

That law really SUCKS! There are many small high-quality SAFE handguns out there...Sig 239, Glock 26, Ruger P95, Kahrs, Berettas, etc to name just a few. I think anyone should be allowed to own a compact OR full size handgun. I really feel sorry for you folks in Canada. Were next though-- The People's Republik Of Kalifornia will be the next place to ban most handguns.

Clead - Welcome to the club. You will find a far majority of shooters to be very good and friendly people.

Aren't you angry that those before you allowed your Right to own whatever gun you want to be taken away? I know I would be if someone told me I could not own a small gun, in essence telling me that I am a criminal that cannot be trusted.

And you know what, those laws that they made that have inhibited your Rights have not lowered gun related crime in your country. Wasn't that the point of the law? Since it has not worked, shouldn't the law be repealed?

Gun crimes in Canada were low before all this gun control, and they are still low (but rising) after all this gun control. The Gun control laws have had no effect on reducing crime.

Let's not let this happen in America. I would hate it if my kids could not own what I can, due to me allowing their Rights to be squandered.

Red Bull, unfortunately, we do not have a constitution that gives us a RIGHT to bear arms. In Canada, the owning of guns is similar to owning a car. It's an assumed freedom that has been around since anyone can remember, but not in our Constitution. Hopefully, without the support of the police, the system will be cancelled, as many predict. Wish us luck!

Yeah, I wish we here in the US had a Constitution that guaranteed our rights to bear arms. Oh wait we do, seems a Constitution has little to do with the law and the application thereof.
