My Kimber keeps rusting on me. I think that any lube will do but I am looking for the one that will offer the most rust resistance.
Out of all the tests out there (none of which I have seen, but I am confident they exist), which lubricant on the market shows the most rust resitant properties?

Thanks!

FACT

My Caspian 1911 was rusting just from thinking about moisture.
Off to ROBAR (www.robarguns.com) for the perfect rust prevention; NP3.

Way worth it, no rust, no lubrication required. The finish is the lubricant.

Perfect. Some day ALL my guns (yes, including the stainless ones) will be NP3'ed.

Without a doubt, Eezox. CLP/Breakfree comes in second.

freedomlover,
Thanks so much. I'd heard how great CLP was but didn't care for it. Now I'll start using it for a full wash down before adding other lube.
I'm going to repeat the test mentioned with the lubes I have and report the results....

Just visited Robar's web site. No e-mail address or phone number. Do you have one? I want to find out the cost of the NP3 treatment for my PT-111 slide.

Boeshield, a waxy lubricant developed for the aerospace industry is the tops, and coming from the Pacific Northwet, we have had ample opporunity to field test rusty firearms.

When Ken Hackathorn was out a couple years ago, we had this discussion, and I tested Boeshield by taking a blued shotgun barrel, (there isn't much that rusts quicker than a shotgun barrel), sprayed it with Boeshield and left it outside in the wet grass and rain overnight!

Next day, we remembered it about noon, checked it and of course, no rust.

We use it on all our guns here, and since doing so, do not have a rusting problem.

If you can't find Boeshield anywhere else, we have it in stock at the pro-shop.

In my opinion, standard Orange Hoppes Lubricating Oil is the best. I was NOT impressed by CLP by any means. The stuff seemed to completely disappear (evaporate?) after only a week. I'm not using it any longer. Maybe it's supposed to do that, but I don't want it. The only reason I tried CLP is that I only had $3.00 on me and this .5 oz bottle of CLP was the only thing in my price range at this one store. Now I know why.

I've been using...

Militec for a few weeks now on my guns and my knives. It's really slick stuff. It also stays where you put it. I guess I haven't used it long enough yet to say for sure, but any oil that stays in place for as long as the Militec does has got to be good for rust prevention. Using a hair dryer to heat the blade or slide rails makes me feel a little silly though. (and my wife laughs at me!) However, the consensus seems to be that the parts to be lubricated (treated in fact), need to be heated to about 150 degrees before you apply the Militec.

lubes

Drundel, Thanks for the excellent link. I switched to Mobil 1 tri-systhetic over a year ago. I use it and a combination of other stuff on hand including a quart of Outers "Best Damn Gun Oil". We have excellent resource folks on this board and I appreciate their willingness to share.
A question was posed in the referenced thread about "Gibbs". I don't have any but it is getting good reviews from local users/sellers.
Thanks,
mac

I'll agree with what has been said about EEZOX. I've been using it since 1988? or thereabouts. I had a Ruger Blackhawk that went through four separate moves in all kinds of climates and all kinds of handling without a spot of rust. First time I cleaned it since 1990 was a few months ago.

Hi All:

Several years ago, Gun Tests tested a variety of lubricating products and, in another issue, tested rust prevention products. They found Boeshield T-9 to be excellent for both purposes. Sheath and Balistol also rated well in both categories. They did not rate Eezox as very effective in either category. I recently ran my own test by coating nails with Boeshield, Balistol and Sentry Solutions dry lube and leaving them outside in Oregon weather for 24 hours. Granted, nails are not gunmetal so I'm not certain you can draw earth shaking conclusions from this little experiment. What I found in three separate tests over three days was that Boeshield was the product that prevented rust.

Please cite the issue of gun tests that said Eezox did not perform well.

Hi BB:

The issue is Volume III, Number 7, July 1991. "Lubricants, Part III: "(Eezox)Reduced drag at room temperature to 4 pounds. At low temperature, it became somewhat gummy, raising the pull to 6 pounds. We consider it fair at room temperature and poor at low temperatures." "Rating as a rust preventative from previous tests, fair. We do not recommend this product as a rust preventative."

The rust preventatives were reviewed in Volume VI, Number 6, June 1994. The following were rated as "excellent:" CRC Marine Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor No 06026, Outers Metal Seal, Boeshield T-9, Specialty Marine Coatings-Promet, Hoppe's Gun Grease, Cortec VCI-368 and Northwest Anti-Corrosion A-120.

Thanks JH, this is pretty interesting. Do they mention how they tested rust prevention? I know of a fellow who blasted a railroad spike to white and treated it with Eezox. It has been hanging on his garage wall for 4 years and still shows no rust; he lives on a saltwater canal in Florida where everything rusts.
