I'm a newbie reloader, so I'm doing my best to read up on everything and learn what I can. Everything I've read tells me that overall length should be a minimum of about 1.23" for JHP's. I've been setting 230 JHP's at about 1.23" -1.24" and FMJFP's at 1.23". Just out of curiosity I measured some Speer and Corbon +P JHP's that I bought. They measure 1.19" and 1.20" AOL respectively. Why? Is this how part of the +P pressure is obtained?

I set my seating die to 1.240 for FMJ's and use the same
setting for HP's. If you try this you will find the same
OAL as the Speer and Cor-Bon. The differance is the
distance from the flat of the HP to the end of the radius
on the FMJ. The +P and +P+ loads are from different powders
and charge weights. Some reloading manuals will tell you
what loadings are +P.

PS my OAL is what will work best in my guns. Make a few
dummy round and cycle them thru your gun.

1.250 Works for Me

It's also about as long as it can be and still function through the magazine. With either rifle or pistol, i alwasy seat the bullet as far out as the magazine will allow. This practice usually provides better accuracy, and actually reduces pressures from the same load with a deeper seated bullet.
