It took me six months but I finally got myself the Smith and Wesson 617 I have been seeking. Picked it up yesterday and today I gave it a quick cleaning and took it out and run some rounds through it. Sorry the snapshot is kind of crappy but I wanted to post something quickly with some paper I shot. One target was shot at in single action and the other is in double action...the double action target is pretty obvious. I need to work on my double action shooting.

The distance was 25 feet and the 3 shots to the left and low on the single action target were my first 3 shots. I also shot at a Do All steel interactive target from 50 feet and flipped the 4 paddles up and the reset paddle in 8 shots.

The 617 is as fine a rimfire revolver as can be had,,,
But what I really like is the Shooting & Drinking Club you belong to.

Most of my shooting friends are tea-totallers (spelling?),,,
Just using the words gun and alcohol in the same sentence sets them off.

Aarond,
Your teetotaler friends would have no problems with how I shoot with my friends and family. If you look at the slogan it states "We shoot, THEN we drink!" No alcohol involved when the firearms are out. When I invite my friends and family over for a barbeque, I tell the shooters to come over a few hours before things really get rolling. This is the alcohol free time and as we shoot you smell a combination of gun powder, gun oil and barbeque smoke...no alcohol smell on our breath!
Insofar as the 617 goes I agree with your opinion that it is as fine a rimfire as can be had. I'll tell you it was a hard find.. My local gun shop placed one on order for me back in March and he could never seem to get one. I stumbled on this one in another shop and the first shop was nice enough to give me my deposit back. I couldn't happier with my purchase, all the sweeter considering how long I waited.

Congratulations.....I agree that the 617's are fine guns ( I have an older 6 shot model 617 in 6" )....and its older cousin the model 18 - blued - in a
4"....and I keep looking for a 6 shot model 617 in a 4"....but they are indeed, very hard to find.

I'll be prowling our local gunshow this weekend ...for a model 617, 6 shot, in a 4" this weekend ....( you never know when it will just magically be there...!!)

My friend came over and shot my new 617 last Saturday and he was VERY impressed with it and wants one for himself now. He's a Smith revolver lover, he owns several. He collects the old 6 shot 8-3/8 bbl models and them in 22lr, 357mag and 44mag. These things are real beauties and shoot like a dream. He also has an engraved 6" bbl 686+ and a 4" bbl 22mag S&W revolver. He told me that after shooting my 617 that he will be making room in his gun cabinet for one real soon!

The squirrels around my property don't stand a chance! There will also be all kinds of wasted paper targets, cans, water bottles and split playing cards.

Nice. I love my 617. Now you might need a speed loader and prestage holders from SpeedBeez. Makes it a lot easier to be quick and effiecent at the range.

MXSailor, Funny you should mention the SpeedBeez Speedloaders...

The SpeedBeez loader and Otterbox block and case combo on the left. The DS-10 speedloader and Pelican block case on the right. Both Speedloaders work great but I like the SpeedBeez loader a little more as it seems a bit more rugged. Both cases hold 100 rounds with the Pelican case able to hold 4 speedloaders. I can load 'em up and go to the range and shoot for long time!

Yes, it look like they are available for the Model 18. Any speedloader or loading block that fits the 6 shot 617 will work with the M-17 and M18. Be careful when ordering as they sell .22lr loaders and blocks other models such as 317, 63 as well as Ruger and Taurus. I've attached some links below so you can check with SpeedBeez and 4wheelguns.com yourself to see what's available.
A word of caution, they are pretty expensive! I paid off my Jeep last month so I had some extra cash and I figure they stand a good chance to last many years...that's my excuse for this non essential purchase!

Well, nevermind on that one bbqbob lol. I do like them whenever I go to the range though. Funny thing is, that was my first accessory for my 617 lol. And a very good one at that. I just need a few more holders (200 rounds not enough anymore lol).

MXSailor, From the very moment I decided to buy the 617 I had the speedloaders and loading block/case combos on my radar. It took me 6 months to finally get my revolver but less than a week to get my first accessories. Between the 2 systems, I hope 200 rounds will be enough! I will be ordering another SpeedBeez loader soon to fill out that extra hole in that Pelican case!
