I trust my 30-30 to 250 yards. I am sure I can hit a deer at 300 yards. Never tried though

Savage99,

First of all, the purpose of suggesting that he load near .308 velocity was because excessive meat damage was a topic being discussed a few posts ago.

And we aren't talking about elk or moose here, it's small deer and hogs with a 300 yard max.

I understand it kind of defeats the purpose of having a .30-06 if you load it like a .308, but for what the OP is doing, a .30-06 is overkill IMO especially if tissue damage is an issue.

I'm glad the .30-30 statement made you smile, but it's still the truth. Not just an opinion.

I guess you would really be against me using 85 gr partitions for deer and black bear

This is what I am talking about, the SGK works remarkably well but I am looking for another load that does not tear these small deer up as bad. This looks like she was hit by a 50 BMG with hollow points. Caution graphic.
Jeebus man, I've seen a lot of stuff an nothing even comes close to that type of soft tissue damage.

You need to either shoot a lot longer distance or get a different caliber if that is the type of damage you are seeing from your rifle on deer.

A friend of mine has a Remi 788 in 30-30 that's phenomenally accurate with 150g SST handloads and I think it would easily take a dear at 300 yards. The 30-30 handloads are getting about the same velocity as my 7.62x39 loads but with a 25g heavier bullet.

@ schmellba99 Yeah it is pretty bad, neck shot a couple others with that load and almost took their head off, skin was the only thing holding it on. My 6.5x55 is not nearly as messy but I want a good bullet for my 30 cals too, might try the 150gr Speer BTSP or SST next they both shoot REALLY well in my 30-06 and 308.

My 30-30 likes a Hornady 160 FTX with Varget Powder. Don't know the velocity, I just load for accuracy.
300 yards with a 30-30 / You Bet.

You need to find a different projectile and look at a little bit meeker load. I wouldn't take that gun hunting simply because it tears so much up - defeats the purpose to me.

Even a BST won't do that kind of damage, and a Partition certainly won't.
