Gen4 Glock finish?

Hi all,

Do all gen4 models use the new nitriding process instead of tennifer?
Also, Any issues with the new process?
Thanks in advance!

Yes. For many years now all Glock pistols have been nitrided. The actual visible finish seems to vary every few months however on both the Gen3 and Gen4 guns but that's just cosmetic and doesn't impact anything.

The new dull flat finish is awful in my opinion. Scratches easily and there have been reports of slides rusting.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_5_13/14...a_glock__.html

My 5 year old G32 has the shiny teflon like finish and looks like the day I brought it home from the LGS.

I have a gen4 g21 that I got as soon as it was released over 2 years ago now... it has the newer flat finish.

I also have the gen4 G20 which I got as soon as it was released around February of this year... it has the shiny teflon-type finish.

Both finish types are okay, but I prefer the flat finish. I find my grip on the slide serrations to be much more positive on the flatter coating rather than the slippery, shiny one.

I don't necessarily think one is better than the other and it wouldn't prevent me from ordering/buying the gun, but given the choice between the 2, I prefer the flat...

Metalife....

I had read a few older forum posts that Glock's US plants had to modify the process of the tennifer because of EPA regulations & state environmental/occupational safety-health rules.

I saw a great Glock 22 Gen04 with a OD frame. The shop included a new LoneWolf Dist 9x19 barrel & 2 Glock 9mm magazines.
I'd add night sights to it & the highly rated Metalife treatment to the Glock upper & spare magazines. Metalife SS C is only $78.00 USD & the shop time is approx 30 days. Extra mags are $10.00 each.
Robar's NP3+ is great too but its not cheap. The work time is long too. 3-6mo.

As posted, scuffs nicks holster wear etc can be annoying.
Some coatings or surface treatments are better than others.

Tennifer, the metal treatment, is not being used anymore in favor of Melonite which is still a salt bath heat treatment. Salt bath heat treatment is used on high speed tool steels. I was a heat treat operator for 11+ years.

Whether one is better than the other I don't know I'm not a metallurgist. Perhaps Gaston knows.

I have them both. Like them both. It was a little confusing at first. I have a 2nd gen blue label Glock 22 that I sent back to get the slide finished and it came back with the rough flat finish. I also have a Glock 17 also blue label that's 3rd gen that is with the shiny finish. I forgot what the Glock 21sf is...but I know most of my Glock's are the shiny finish. They're both fine for me. However the shinier one seems to be a little more tough. My Glock 19 (CCW) get's beat up and it's holding up great.

I don't know why so many do not understand this, Tenifer is not a finish. It is a surface hardening treatment and it does not alter the color. That black stuff on a Glock's slide, that ain't Tenifer.

Glock.com; tennifer....

I just buzzed past www.glock.com the US version.
The specs & data no longer list tennifer as the surface treatment on Glock models(sold in the US area).
Tennifer is not listed anywhere on the US website.
I guess if you have a older format Glock you're a lucky dog, .
I never owned any G-locks so I can't say or compare any models.

Id still buy a NIB model 22 or 23 Gen04 & do some tinkering.

Tenifer is a nitriding process, too. It is the commercial name of a salt bath ferritic nitriding process. Glock used to apply salt bath nitriding process followed by epoxy based baked on coating which used to give the shiny surface appearance to the older slides. Now the Glock slides are treated with plasma assisted ferritic nitrocarburizing. The slides get blackened during this process and are not coated with an additional paint.

Best.

FWIW; Duracoat...

I was bored last night & checked a few "paint-job"/coating shops online.
The Glocks were very impressive & seemed to hold up to the color schemes well.
They run from cool(camo & skulls) to tacky(hot pink, mellow yellow, lime green).
The black ops camo caught my eye, . + the brown & tan shades.
If I worked outdoors often or in the hot sun, Id coat a pistol with a lighter shade.

I'm still a bit leery of the Duracoat system not peeling or wearing off over time.

BTW; Many of the custom shops coat holsters, handcuffs, knives, mag holders, etc.

+1
But no matter how often you repeat it someone will whine about their tenifer wearing off.

Gen. 4 Finish

I have polished the barrels on over 50 Glocks, removing the phosphate finish, leaving a shiny " chrome" look. This does not disturb the Tennifer process. I have also sand blasted many Glock slides, with a a "sand" made for this purpose. I found that newer gen.3 and all gen. 4 Glocks look much different when polished/ blasted. After the phosphate is removed the "chrome" look of the older gens. is not on the newer guns. I am certain the newer Glocks have a finish other than Tennifer.

If glock stopped using tennifer finish in 2010 why are some shops selling Glock 4th generation models with tennifer finish? Confused.

Glocks produced in Austria still have the Tenifer treatment.

I have two emails from two different Glock reps stating Glock stopped the Tennifer process in 2010.
No shop in this country is selling a Glock made after 2010 with a Tennifer process done to it.

Nope, Glock says what I told you.
If anybody's currently advertising their new guns MADE AFTER 2010 use Tennifer, they're mistaken.

Interesting. I wonder why the change? The new Glock finish, whatever it is (I known Tenifer is a treatment, not a finish) definitely seems to be inferior to the old.

Because tennifer treatment violated EPA regulations, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not sure why people are saying the new finish is inferior. I most certainly prefer it to the old super-slick teflon style finish. The new(and older, actually, before they went to the slick style) finish provides much better traction on the slide serrations to me. I'm also a matte black finish kinda guy I guess, so I just think it looks better. Of course, these are only my opinions, but I'm rather pleased with the change.

If the information on the internet is true ('cuz, you know, they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true), Uncle Malice has it right. From what I've been able to tell, Glock quit doing Tennifer because of EPA regs.
