id say 3 is minimum. if your the rifleman you only need 1.
everyone should have at least 1, make it law. The only people i know that are anti-gun have never been taught safty- never held a gun- usually scared due to ignorance. After those folks understood basic safety and popped off a couple rounds, they were on board.
rifle
shotty
pistol

need? want? LOL

I like the guns I have, I have hunting rifles (centerfire and rimfire), shoutguns and handguns. I have shotguns that I use for skeet/trap and ones that I use for home defense. I have numerouse handguns, both revolver and semi-auto's (again both centerfire and rimfire). Some I use for home defesne, some for target shooting, some I carry from time to time. Do I have enough? No, probably never will as there is always something else that catches my eye and I would like to have. Finances permitting, i will buy it when the right deal comes up. I maintain a spreadsheet of the guns I own and the ones I want to own, currently the want to own list sits at 14 different guns. It varies from a 4" stainless Colt Python to a Sharps 45-70 with lots inbetween. Some will be easy to find, such as the Glock 19, others such as the 4" Python, not so much.

So much like Rockafeller who wants one more dollar than he currently has, I too want one more gun than I currently have.

Wow, what a crazy question this is our hobby and more like an addiction right.

It is an investment and or choice what we want or need to buy

Define NEED. Thee are very few things in this world that a person actually "needs". Mostly it is things we want or think we need. Food, water, air is all we need in the most basic sense. Everything else is a want. Many people live without any guns at all. Fortunately, I don't have to be one of those poor underprivileged souls. I have gone for up to three years at a time without a gun. Granted it was a strain to do, but I did it. Oops, sorry. I just remembered I borrowed a gun during that time. Make it one year.

Seriously, I wouldn't feel right without a ccw, a shotgun, and a 22lr rifle at the minimum.

I don't collect anything anymore just for the sake of collecting. I''ve owned 50+ guns over the last 7 or so years but have been selling a lot of them. In fact, one was sold today. I would say that 5 would be a minimum need for me even though I don't think that I'll get to that. I think I will eventually be down to about 20.

Auto5 you are on the right track. It all depends on what you are doing. I would not want to go bear hunting in Alaska with a .223 even if it does have a 30rd magazine. A .338 win mag seems more appropriate even if it only holds 3 rounds.

I think it really comes down a matter of how many you want. This is after all a free country founded on the concept of personal liberty. If you don't want a gun you don't have to own one. If you want 50 guns you are free to do so. I honestly don't know what I would do with 50 guns.

How many do I think I need? Well I would say a minimum of 3 is fair. A good pistol to carry, a nice multipurpose rifle like an AR15 or AR10, and a pump shotgun would cover all the bases I want to cover. I could hunt deer, duck, etc, protect my home, family, and self, and a guy could have a lot of fun at the range between the 3 of them.

The question, as originally posed to me, seemed to imply that a person doesn't need more than one gun for self defense. I was trying to demonstrate that different guns are better suited for different defense situations in the home and away. Those listed are only my home and personal defense battery. If I started listing hunting guns (rifles, shotguns and handguns, varied by type of game and hunting conditions), target and recreational shooting guns, historic and collectible guns, etc., I'm pretty sure my wife would have figured out that I spend way more than she spends on shoes. I suppose the smart ass answer would have been "Just one or two, at a time, but I keep a lot of spares."

Answer : There is no legal limit on how many I can own. No one has the right to tell me how many I need.

Might as well ask her to say how many purses or pairs of shoes she needs.

I liken this to golf clubs. How many in a bag? How many sets do serious golfers have? How soon till they are buying a single $600 Big Bertha iron. Till they are having customized sets made? Buying their significant other a set!?

It's like asking a golfer how many clubs do they need. Different clubs for different scenarios. And many golfers have more than one set, and each set has close to a dozen clubs. One set may be for just keeping in the trunk of your car for banging balls at the range on an early quit day, and another set for real golf on Sundays. Might even have a real nice third set that you don't want to mess up yet and only use them for those golf outings with work friends.

So I need at least 36.

Edit: Matt beat me to it.

1- Full size pistol

1- pistol for carry (only if you can't carry a full size)

1- Hunting shotgun

1- tactical shotgun

1- Semi auto centerfire rifle of the tactical type

1- hunting rifle capable of bringing down the largest game you hunt or could reasonable expect to encounter in your neck of the woods.

Total- 6, 2 pistols, 2 shotguns, 2 rifles

If forced, God forbid, and not in a SHTF scenario, I could get by with just my 1911 or my Glock. (Edit) But that is in no way ideal. I would have to be tightening the belt quite a bit to get to that point, no more hunting or plinking, just one gun for carry and home defense.

How many guns do you NEED?

My thought out, honest answer for the forum:

Two. Specifically, twin Glocks. 19 or 23, Gen 4.

I don't hunt. I shoot recreationally, carry concealed, and obviously have home defense in mind. I can use the same pistol for all of that. The second one is to make sure that I always have 1. "Two is one, one is none."

My thought out, honest answer for most people who ask:

The answer to the question is irrelevant.

Need?

It's never been a question of need.

It's a question of WANT.

Need is a dangerous word.

I'm thinking rimfire pistol and carbine, carry pistol, hunting rifle, EBR, and a shotgun.

That makes 6, which is a pretty good start. It could be consolidated with some different uppers.

How many do I NEED? Probably 2-3. Funny, the wife and I were just talking about that tonight and I had to admit to her that if we had the money I would probably have a couple hundred by now. I love the way they look. They look like pieces of art to me. Especially handguns.

I personally "need" about 10 guns of various calibers and types. After that, it is pretty much "want".

I don't tell people who don't already have a sense of my attitudes ANYTHING about how many or what types of firearms I own. Why tell an anti anything that is going to just make them think you're some kind of gun toting redneck?

This matches my "plan."

I have:
A Ruger MKII target pistol
A Sporterized Mauser
A Mossberg 500

My planned next three purchases:
A S&W 642 (I have determined I might actually carry this weapon vs having to strap on a medium sized auto like the G19 or PPQ, after all, with a decent pocket holster it's just so easy to carry)
A Henry H001
A Colt LE6920 (hopefully a 30th bday gift to myself.)

Honestly, those guns will pretty much cover anything I could "justify" to someone who doesn't know. Only another enthusiast would understand why I also need a Walther PPQ (to backup the AR after all), a Brownig Citori, a 1911, a USP, a CZ75B, a S&W 27,29, and 64, a Henry big boy in .44 and .357, a Luger, a scout rifle, a Glock 20, a silenced HK45, a lever gun in .45-70, a double-rifle, a Sig 938, and ECT...

How many guns do you NEED?

You need As many as you want. In all practically you could economically get by with one shotgun. In reality three. Shotgun, rifle, and pistol. Ideally somewhere between 30-50.

Firearms are also inflation proof as well as there ammo being just as important if not more.

Most of the value increase in most firearms is due to inflation and the cost of new or current firearms as a comparison. Inflation proof, no, but I know what you mean. The dollar value in terms of buying power approaches a constant.

Last I looked a stock I have went down $502.00. I can't ever remember losing any money on a firearm. Collector value is a whole other issue.
Of course another stock may go up $502, but I'm not much of a gambler. I look at guns and ammo as better than money in the bank.
Inflation proof, maybe not. A safe net to not loose money, yes.
Wished I had back all the guns I've sold. Have regretted selling everyone.
