5.56 Federal 62gr Mod0 SOST Gel Test Results

Finished up the testing of the Federal 5.56 62gr Mod0 OTM SOST (T556TNB1) round. Here are the conditions and results.

Test conditions:
-16'' CHF PSA barrel
-Test rounds fired from 15 feet
-"FBI spec" (Their term, not mine...) Clear Ballistics gel block

Chrono Data:
-2997 feet per second
-1235 foot pounds of energy

-1st shot passed through 32'' of gel
-2nd shot stopped at 32''
-Fragmentation occurred along the way

By FBI spec, does that mean you calibrated the gel with a BB? Because 32" is a whole lot of penetration for 5.56mm, even a bonded one. It sounds like your gel might have got a bit warm or in some other way isn't matching up with the FBI gel.

No, they make several types of gel (some for arrows, dummies, and bullets). Their bullet gel is called "FBI spec." I calibrated it as I do every time (per mfg specs) and almost all of my tests are within 1-2" of ammo manufacturer published data.

Other tests have reported very similar penetration in actual ballistic gel so I think it's a good representation of what can be expected.
