Preparing new AR for its inagural use...

This past week I finally got a modern sporting rifle. I was able to get a SIG M400 Enhanced from Cabela's at a very good price. I plan to shoot it next week. Why so long from purchase to shoot? Well, I only had a rudimentary knowledge of the AR from my military service (as an officer I only qualified on M9, my M4 training was 2 hour classroom affair on "what to do if you're in a convoy that gets ambushed and absolutely have to use one"), so I have spent the past week refreshing on function, dis-assembly, and cleaning. Today I made sure I could break the rifle down and gave it a good initial cleaning. Thus the questions:

1. I had a heck of a time getting the extractor pin out. Is that part of having a new firearm, a function of SIG having tight manufacturing tolerances, or just plain normal?

2. The action spring and buffer assembly had a lot of white looking "grease" on it. I assume I don't clean that off for use (that it's the proper lubrication).

3. Most bolt carrier assembly items (along with the trigger group) had a pretty thick later of oil on it. Am I correct in assuming that this heavy layer of oil was there to protect the firearm in case it is on the shelf for a long period. I also assume that the purpose of the pre-cleaning is to get all that oil off and provide a cleaner, more appropriate lubrication on the firearm.

4. I am now comfortable with all aspects of my firearm...and I'm even looking forward to truly customizing it to my own personal style (I may replace the front sight with a rail gas block for a fold-able front sight). That being said, are there any big recommendations for a first use (safety, maintenance, specialized equipment, etc)?

Thanks ya'll.
