Value of M1 Garand?
Hey guys, just wondering how much a 2.1mil serial number M1 from Springfield is worth? It's in great shape, but it has a 1952 H&R barrel on it.

I guess $700+- with out seeing the condition condition. Post some pics to get a better assesment.
But given the current panic, you might see $1000 WK |

Have you gauged the barrel?

I picked it up at a gun show today for $700. I know the gunsmith that looked it over for the guy and he said it gauged a 3. I didn't have any gauges, but the bore looks perfect. I'm not sure how to post pics either. I'm on my phone.

Does it have original USGI wood?
There's pretty much no such thing as an all original as-it-left-the-factory M1 Garand; they've all been redone at various armories. While there might be some out there, they're very rare and bring a premium. The CMP is selling good condition reconditioned Garands with new wood for around $600 or so, so $700 is not out of the ballpark. If yours has original USGI wood the value is likely higher, but even then I'd be surprised if it was over $800. The current panic hasn't really affected the M1 much; while it's a very capable rifle its lack of a detachable magazine makes it unlikely to end up on a ban list (unless you live in NY state). The CMP has been swamped by orders, but that was happening before the panic hit. I'd say you have a good shooter, but probably not something of extreme collector value (there's few that hit that level). Shoot it and enjoy your piece of history. |

I think it is the original wood. It has the P in a circle on the grip, and I think a very light cartouche on the left side, by the receiver. Hard to tell though. It shoots great.

the P is the US acceptance proof, the left of the stock just about the trigger is the inspectors mark, the armory it came from and the inspectors initials. at some point in the 50s they switched to a universal stamp that's an eagle with 3 stars.

The left side cartouche is very light, I can't really make it out. I took a couple pics even though I can't post them and the camera can't even pick it up. Did these have the crossed cannons or the flaming bomb?

IIRC they should have the crossed cannons on the top of the barrel under the handguard.

I meant for the side cartouche. But I'm sure the barrel won't have that because its an H&R.

ahh, missed the H&R part, no I don't think springfield ever stamped the stock with the crossed cannons but I could be wrong, I'm also new the garands.

Ok, so it might not be a cartouche, maybe just part of the grain. I'm really liking this rifle though. I've wanted one since I was probably 5 and finally got one.

IIRC, gauging a 3 is very bad. You basically have a Garand that should be shooting .303 bullets, not .30 caliber bullets.

Are we talking muzzle or throat here? The throat gauge actually goes to 10, and CMP has been selling 5 and 6 as rack grade. Service should be around 3, so that's a nice throat.

Re: Value of M1 Garand?
I'm referring to muzzle. And although the gauge goes to 5 on the muzzle, that doesn't mean it's going to be very accurate at 3.

Throat is a 3 then. He said it was a 3 out of 10. Not sure what muzzle is. I don't have a gauge. But it looks good.

Take a complete round and attempt to insert the bullet into the muzzle. If you don't hit brass or get really close to it, you've still got a decent barrel.

I tried that bullet test with an HXP '78 and it still has about a 1/4" to go until it hits the casing.

Does anyone have any favorite handloads for M1s? Surplus is drying up and getting expensive. I just picked up some IMR4895, 4064, and a box of 168gr SMK's. I'll hopefully get a batch done this weekend so I can test them out. Any other recommended powders/bullets?

the hornady reloading manual has an entire section devoted to M1 safe 06 loads. just about all bullet weights use 4895 IIRC.
I haven't dabbled in any loads yet myself, all my brass is lake city and I'm too lazy to decrimp primer pockets so I'm going to wait for my HXP to arrive and play around with that for the mean time.

A muzzle that measures a 3 is far from being worn out.

That's what I was thinking. And after trying the bullet in the muzzle thing, it doesn't seem like its even a 3. And I worked up a decent load yesterday. 47 grains of IMR4064, 168gr SMK. Didn't try for super accuracy, as its just a plinking load for now, but it shot pretty good. I didn't shoot for groups, but it hit what I was aiming at.
