Non removable grips for Ruger 22/45

Greetings, can anyone point me to a solution for better grips on the (base) 22/45 without removable grips? The molded grip is cheesy at best. Houge has the Handall stretch over grip, but it is only covers the lower part of the grip. Love the gun, hate the grip!

I believe Ruger made a model of the 22/45 that had recessed grips that could be removed. An expensive option as you need to purchase a new pistol. The 22/45 grip may seem cheesy, but it has been fine for me.

Thank you Weblance. I wonder if total dis-assembly is required if the paint job is not done. Completely covering the rest of the gun should be sufficient I would think. Your thoughts?

I really dont know. The 22/45s I have are all replaceable grip models. I just knew where to find the info. Hope it helps.

I did the grip panel modification to my 22/45 MKIII several years ago, my total cost was about $5 (4 grip screw bushings) as I already had some spare 1911 grips and screws in the parts box. I removed the upper, and used masking tape on the areas of the grip frame surrounding the molded grip panels to protect them from the grinder and file, then started with a Dremel, and finished with a file.

You don't NEED to disassemble fully, but unless you seal up every nook and crany in the frame, the debris from grinding/filing will find a way in and require disassembly to clean it out anyway. Start to finish I spent about 5 hours on mine, including modifying the grips (some used wrap around pachmyer's i had) to fit around the slide release.
