Korean M2 Ball 1975 Lot PS2-165

Can I get an Update on the safety of this ammo? It has had a lot of Press in the past, some good, some bad.......mainly about head splits.....from the primer upwards when fired in a Garand. I want to break it down, replace the powder charge with a slower, lighter one, reseat the 150 grn ball bullet and use it in my 1917 Enfield. Does anyone see a problem here??

Yes, I see a problem.

If the cases are bad there is nothing to be gained by changing the powder.

Gunpowder ages and as it ages it gives off NOx vapors, some of which convert to nitric acid gas. That nitric acid gas ruins brass, causes pin holes, green corrosion, body splits.

A reasonable shelf life for gunpowder is 20 years with double based and 45 years with single based. Exposure to constant temperatures above 90 F, above 100 F, reduce the lifetime of gunpowder to months, weeks. Combustion pressures are raised to unsafe levels in ammunition stored under long term hot conditions.

Suspect gunpowder is tested in 150 F ovens, if it fumes within 30 days it is considered unsafe for continued storage.

So, I would dump the powder out of those cases and examine the cases. If there is no evidence of pin hole corrosion, green corrosion inside the cases or on the bases of the bullets, I would risk using the cases.

However be aware, those rounds are on the market because Korean Ammunition specialists decided the stuff was either unsafe to store, or unsafe for their troops to use, or both. There is risk with old surplus ammunition.



These are from old, 1969 and 1970 safety reports. You can see that forty years ago the US military was demilling thousands of old WW2 ammunition.

That is a graduate course in military surplus ammunition! Thank you! I will break ALL the rounds down, examine each bullet for corrosion, and autopsy several cases. IF I find NO corrosion, I will reload the rounds with a LIGHTER charge of fresh powder and use them for practice in my very strong bolt action Enfield. I will NOT let my Garand have any.

Let me recommend any of the IMR 4895 powders, that is IMR 4895/H4895/AA2495. H4895 used to be a copy of IMR 4895 now it is an more advanced powder, but velocity versus charge weight, I can't much of a difference. AA2495 is Accurate Arms copy of IMR 4895 but stupidly they call it 2495 and confuse everyone.

Buy by price.



I think a load of a 150 gr bullet with 47.5 grs of IMR 4895 is a ballistic equal to GI ball.

I ran a number of tests in different rifles, including Garands, and this load is appropriate for my Garands.
