7.62x54r Silver bar on tin?

Local Gun shop is selling 7.62x54R tins. They are silver tip rounds, with a silver bar on each tin. anyone know if this is somehting special?

from what i have found online, these are LPS rounds? are they particularly good?

Likely Bulgarian steel core.

agreed, a lot of indoor ranges wont allow steel core ammo and outdoor ranges with steel targets wont let you shoot it at those either. if you go to an outdoor range and only shoot paper youd probably be fine but a lot of guys have issues with the bulgy stuff fitting a bit tight.

i shoot on private land, no issue with steel core. does anyone know if this ammo is any good in practical applications?

not good for hunting, little or no expansion...
alright for varmints since they require little expansion but anything larger than a raccoon or skunk will require soft points.

generally speaking these are more expensive than regular spam cans, so I just want to know if they are worth it at all. My understanding is that Steel Core ammo was developed for penetrating armor, but I have had a hard time finding info to back that up. Everything online written about steel core ammo simply revolves are on importation bans and about ranges not allowing it.

If they are indeed more "armor piercing" than regular rounds, I would buy it for cool factor alone.

If it is steel-core ammo, the simple answer is 'yes'. They are better at penetrating hard targets than plain old lead-core bullets.

A technical discussion of the different types of bullets can get much more complicated, but the simple answer is yes.

The silver tipped LPS round has a "mild steel core". My limited understanding is that choice of the mild steel core was a production and cost decision, ie cheaper than a lead core, as opposed to any "intended" value in armor piercing. The LPS round is "light ball" and I do not think its nomenclature mentions any enhanced or intended AP ability. All that said, it may penetrate hard stuff better than a lead core, I dunno.

A true AP round will have a "hardened steel core". Ivan likely had designated AP, and API ammo, I cannot advise on the bullet tip color, but such info is easily found at one of the x54R or Mosin sites.
