If you are partial to 1911-style pistols, check out Para-Ordnance.
I have a hand-built Para in .45 ACP that is reliable and accurate. The all-steel frame is heavy with a full mag, it isn't terribly concealable, and it isn't for those with small hands. That said, for a double-stack .45 in a SHTF pistol, its worth consideration. Mine is almost 25 years old, but here is the 2013 version: http://www.para-usa.com/2013/-/uploa..._SpecSheet.pdf YMMV.

CZ-75BD
I love my CZ-75BD. 16+1, all steel, reliable as hell, and feels the best out of all my handguns in my hand.

CZ75B-
HI Ya, I have a CZ75B-SA, I am not sure if you would appreciate the Single Action trigger but it is my most accurate 9mm.
I like the XD9 also but the CZ has my vote for accuracy, feel, and stuff. Try it you will thank me. Max It |

Para-Ordnance P14.45.
Hi-Power is a close second, but I don't care for the magazine safety "feature." |

Beretta 92FS - I love mine.
BHP - I would love one if I could get my mitts on one. Those two are classics. Beautiful both aesthetically and functionally. |

Not sure what you have in mind to spend, but the folks at STI make the finest hi-cap 1911s available. Originally designed in full size for competition shooters they now have a line of double stack 1911s (they refer to them as 2011s) in a variety of sizes and calibers. Watch any IPSC/USPSA match and you'll see quite a few STI pistols or custom race guns built on their platform. I have several and have never found anything that I like as much as my STI Edge.

I'm quite fond of my CZ 97b. The M&P 45 would be interesting.

An old school 9mm P226. P229s are supposed to be "compact", but I like one of those in .40 or .357.

By and far my favorite is my CZ-75B. Mine is a plain version and I love it, but you can find decocker versions and Sao. It's the most accurate and comfortable pistol I own. The only issue you might have would be finding one. Czcustom.com is a great resource for moat things CZ.
Edit: The CZ-75B is also available in .40. |

CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical. Of course I have nothing to compare it to because it is my only full size nine. I sure like it though.
