Should a NRA certified Range Safety Offier charge anything for working at a range or competition?

If it's a range or event that charges a fee to shoot, absolutely.

If you are a member of the range, NO. IMO its called GOOD Karma. At the private range I belong to many of us that are NRA Certified RSO's volunteer our time as RSO's so the members can come and shoot. One of our rules RSO must be present to shoot. I also RSO/SO our Steel, IDPA, ICORE matches. No charge. Its called giving back to the sport and helping support the range and a place to shoot.

This is actually a much more complex question than you give it credit for. If the competition/ range host hires a safety officer than that there could liability concerns and other problems.

Referees and other officials get paid at football and baseball games (among others) often. Some sports don't pay anything at all.

This! Its a hobby, not a business oppertunity.
I even paid for my RSO course so I could give something back by having the range open more often as we use a similar system.

I do not need babysat at our private range.

Nor do I, but when I go to a semi-private club range its an opperetunity to give a little back. You might give it a try it can be arewarding experience if you approach it in the light of "helping out a brother".

RSO's are not babysittingers. We are there to keep you safe from careless. clueless, lazy people who refuse to adhere to the 4 comandments of firearm safety. That an shoot a lot of cool guns for free

Plus 1 on that. Also, Take in to account-You being a seasoned veteran at shooting. Some are not and like to have help there. With the Big O scare,I can attest that there are 100's of newbies out at the range now

Sure we are.

I take 1/2 a gunshop with me to babysit people who do silly things like load the bullets in a magazine pointy end to the rear then jam up the gun.

The RO's at my local range volunteer. Some have been doing it for years and I feel that the club (which isn't poor) should perhaps give them a small appretiation gift for a year of service.
