One Gun This Year. Which One?

Well, I have a little money from Christmas and was thinking of another firearm. This will probably be the only gun I get to buy this year thanks to the crappy economy, so, no more membership in the gun of the month club. I had thought about another AR, but that is now out of the question due to the price increases.

The gun would serve no purpose other than having it to shoot for fun. What I have been thinking about is another 1911, a Ruger SA revolver or the sweet CZ 75 P-01 I just handled. I've got a 1974 Colt Series 70 1911, a SA Loaded 1911 and a RIA Compact 1911 all in .45acp. I have a CZ 75 and a RAMI, both in 9mm. And, I have a 1955 Ruger Single Six. So, I'm just looking for a little input to see what folks would do in my position.

I’ve been considering a slightly higher end 1911 maybe one of the offerings from Colt like the XSE or Combat Elite. Then there is the possibility of a lower end Les Baer or Ed Brown if I am good and save a little extra. Another wild card I have been considering is something really different like a 1911 chambered in 38 Super.

I can't say enough nice things about my P01, so I'm biased.

The 1911's and SA revolvers aren't as threatened.

BTW I had a 75 for ten years. There's nothing the 75 can do better that the P01 can't, IMO. I actually sold the heavier gun to help finance the new one.

I doubt therell be any new guns for me this year. wife wants one too, but if i do id like a 1911. always wanted one and im sure theyll be popular no matter what law passes

If there is a P01 you can put your hands on go for It. Hard to find now, maybe impossible to find later

Joe it looks as if you have the .45 caliber autoloaders taken care of, as well as the single actions. As I've always believed in quality over quantity and if I were to be limited to one handgun purchase in 2013, I would find a vintage S&W .357 Magnum, M- 19, 28, 27, 66, 581, or 586. Any of the above would round out your collection nicely and let you have the versatility of the .357 Magnum platform.

Well, the stated purpose is fun, so I'd suggest either a Buckmark or Ruger Mk III or 22/45. You can actually afford to shoot those things a ton. That failing, go all out and get a Colt's Single Action Army. If the budget won't support that weight, get an Uberti in one of the traditional SASS rounds. I'm considering an Evil Roy, in part because it is said (Gun Tests) to be an historically reliable reproduction of the SAA. Of course, it is Eye-talian!!

Or, on the other hand, anything in .41 Magnum.

If you aren't hell-bent on another handgun, and you don't have one, I'd suggest you get a lever action rifle. Sorry, but for fun they can't be beat, and they're damned good as serviceable weapons.

The SP01 is a great gun. I had a limited budget when I was shopping for my first handgun and the SP01 was $100 more then I could afford. I think everyone should try a CZ at some point.

The Ruger 1911 would probably be my choice if I had to pick from your list. A Ruger Vaquero would be nice too if I could decide on caliber.

I know this wasn't in your poll but someone else mentioned it so I'll second it. A Smith and Wesson 19 would be a great choice. I've been trying to find either a 19 or 66 at a decent price for some time now.

I suggested the Ruger Vaquero in .357, because I want one ...

Already got my first gun of the year, picked it up last week .. a Springer XDs .. had it out to the range Monday, great shooter, perfect for carry ... looks like my Kahr PM9 may be relegated to range duty ...

Next up, if I can collect the cash ... a Ruger LCR in .22WMR ...

Have a .45 Colt New Vaquero - it is a beautiful thing. Perfect size, balance, fit, and finish. The .45 Colt cartridge is a beautiful thing as well.

I do have some vintage S&W wheelguns - a 13 3" barrel, 65 3 " barrel, 1937 38-44 HD, 1980 520 and a 17-8. I had a model 19 and sold it last year because I just don't like nickel.

I've got a 22/45 and was going to buy a MK III Hunter in stainless but almost all .22lr handguns around here have dried up along with the ammo.

I voted for the 1911 in 9mm just because it was on the list and a Browning Hi-Power was not. I also have many 1911's and more than a few Hi-Powers but I really have an affinity for DA revolvers. Have you thought about maybe a S&W N-Frame?..............perhaps a model 24 or 29. I do love those .44's and once you've shot .44 Special, you're hooked.

I have 1911s, CZs, and a Ruger SA (birdshead Vaquero).

Of the guns you list, I'd also recommend the P-01, largely on the basis that the other guns are not likely to be on the endangered list - although I still suggest money for purchases right now might be better spent on NRA-ILA, SAF, or other RKBA lobbying/litigating organizations.

I agree with Chris in VA, that since acquiring the P-01, I haven't had much urge to shoot the bigger CZs - the P-01 is that nice.

So, even though I'm a long-time 1911 fan, and normally carry a 1911, in this instance, given your possible choices, I'd say the P-01 should be the short-term purchase.
