Looking to pick up my next handgun, and hopefully when I get my CHL this year, my CCW. What do you think?

I voted for other. I like Glock. They are rugged, reliable and accurate right out of the box. My main carry gun is a Glock 21SF .45. Under a coat / jacket in cool weather, under an oversized T-shirt in warm weather.

CZ P06. 40 S&W version of the P01.

I had the SP101, couldn't shoot it worth a darn with 357's. I realized 5 rounds of 38 was pointless when I could have more 9mm +p in a semiauto.

I own (kind of) a version of each. When I say "kind of" I have an SP101 without the bobbed hammer, an XDm .45 and an M&P9 (Full size, not the shield). While I love the SP101, the trigger leaves a LOT to be desired. It is also heavy, its a freakin tank but it shoots great if you get used to the trigger. I put a Trijicon front sight on mine and it is my nightstand gun. Well, my 870 is by the bedside but the Ruger is on the nightstand.

The Smith and the Springfield are both solid pistols too, honestly you are putting up a really tough three to choose from. You will not be disappointed in any of them.

The factory Ruger grips leave a lot to be desired as well.

Consider GLOCK 26/27 or Walther PPS.

Of the three you listed I would go with the Shield.

I voted other, because of the three weapons you gave, I would go for the Shield in 9mm- just not a fan of the 40S&W. I don't carry a .45, but if I did, I would trend towards an all metal or a full size polymer, just to help absorb some recoil. In terms of CCW, if you wanted a wheel gun, I'd look at the Smith J-frame revolvers, and yes, in a .38 spec. As to Chris's point- while capacity is a consideration, I wouldn't call 5 rounds of .38 +p "pointless" by any stretch of the imagination.

I picked the Ruger because as a CCW gun, it is easy to conceal and shoot. I would opt for a regular hammer however. You would want the opt of shooting both single and double action.

The XD and M&P are both good choices too. As a first gun, I just feel a revolver is a better choice and shooting .38s can give you a lot of trigger time.

45acp, low pressure, bigger bullet. Easier to shoot than the hi pressure 40 or very high pressure 357 mag. Follow up shots are important for a CCW gun. That's my 2 cents worth free of charge.

i voted for the xds just to give your poll some meaning. of the ones you listed, the xds is definitely the way to go. personally though, i like to carry 9mm, so i carry a walther pps when i want something as small and concealable as the xds, and it's big brother the ppq when i have a sweatshirt on.

Since two of the choices are smaller guns I'm definitely not going to go with others and say a Glock (I'm not a Glockite anyway). But really if you are familiar with and comfortable with a .45 I would definitely get the XDs.

Myself, I don't own a .45, and probably never will, so I would go with something else like a Sig P238, P938 or P290. But, if you are comfortable with a .45 definitely go with the biggest caliber you can (within reason).

I voted "other." I suggest a Smith & Wesson Model 12, with a 2" barrel. Six shots, 38 special. Aluminum frame. Add a Tylers "T-Grip" and you're in business.

Why? I've tried a lot of carry guns. XD's, Glocks, Shield, Kel-Tec P-11, J-Frame sized snub. The K-frame, Airweight is what I finally settled on. Light enough to not notice it. One more round than the five shot snubs. Not all that much bigger. 38 Special has plenty of power to suit me.

The down side is they don't make it anymore, so you have to look for one.

I voted "other" for the Walther PPS: in my opinion it's better than the Shield in every way but price. And I'd pick the 9mm over the .40; in my opinion the tiny increase in power isn't worth the lower capacity, snappier recoil, and slower follow-up shots.

Hard to beat a SP101 as a carry pistol. I like the 3" barrel best. It'll run 100% on any 38/357 ammo you can get. It's simple to maintain and teach. If I had to pick JUST ONE pistol to own the SP101 would be my choice.
