Magpul Pmag help????
I'm looking to buy some magazines. I'm new to AR 15s. I went to Magpuls website, seems the part #s of the magazines that cabellas and local gun stores have are different. I'm confused on what to buy. The retail stores are saying they have Mag 210 mostly, and a little 211, and 217. The 217 in the pics on Cabelas shows a straight magazine with no curve or arch. That don't sound right?? When I go to Magpuls site and click on pmags, they dont have any of those above mentioned part numbers. They start talking about gen 2 and gen 3. I thought that was only glock talk. So I'm confused what to buy. I heard 30 rounders sometimes have issues. Is that true? It seems theres a shortage of 20 rounders available? Any body know why? Anyway, I want to buy some magazines now. I'm asking for some help on which to buy. I'd appreciate any reponses to any of these questions or advice on this. thanks??

On the one hand, I think you're overthinking this. On the other, I don't know you, your gun, or its desired use. I have four P-Mags, no idea what part number. (And by the way, they make several different same effect mags, the part number could be color, window, no window, etc.)
To me, a P-mag is a p-mag... I wouldn't worry about it. Especialy since the flavor of the month in AR mags changes more than every month. |

Shouldn't be any issues with a quality 30-round magazine. If you buy a bunch of worn out GI junk then maybe, but not new magazines. Magpul just came out with their Gen 3 Pmags. The improvements to the M3 mags can be found on their site http://www.magpul.com/introducing-the-pmag-30-m3.html Check out Bravo Companies website for a wide selection of AR magazines. If you want something a little less expensive they sell a teflon finish, GI style magazine with a Magpul follower. I've heard of many people having great success with these mags. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/AR15-magazines-s/104.htm The Pmags or the Teflon mags with the Magpul followers will be good-to-go.

From my own experience and just from wandering around the boards for a while.
I have both Gen 2 30 round and 20 round magazines, the 20 round magazines don't appear to be as popular as the 30rnd magazines, so perhaps that's why they're hard to find. In terms of reliability all of mine have functioned flawlessly with both brass and steel cased rounds from several manufactureres including PMC, Wolf and Tula. You really can't go wrong with PMAGS There are some rifles that don't accept PMAG' such as the FS2000 and the FN SCAR16s (Note with the SCAR16s, it simply requires a dremel tool to modify the magazine so that it won't damage the rifle to make them ok to shoot in the rifle) The latest Generation 3 "P MAGS' have a narrower profile so that they can be placed in chest rigs better among other minor differences. There are several pictures on the Cabela's website appears to carry the Gen 2 Pmags, you have to select which one you want. They appear to offer 2 color choices for the 20 rnd magazines, black and flat earth, while the 30 round magazines are offered only in black (The 30rnd magazine is shown in the third picture) http://www.cabelas.com/gifts-for-the...and-30-2.shtml In regards to the numbers they appear to refer to the manufactures code, the aformentioned numbers specifically regarding Gen 2 PMAGS. Each number refers to a specific model of magazine the acronyms specifying the color each model of magazine respectively MAG210-blk/fde/odg: Gen2 Pmag with windows 30rnd MAG211-blk/fde/odg: Gen2 Pmag without windows 30rnd MAG217-blk/fde/odg: Gen2 Pmag 20rnd Gen 3 PMAGS following the designations listed below respectively MAG556-blk/fde/odg: Gen 3 Pmag with windows 30rnd MAG557-blk/fde/odg:Gen 3 Pmag without windows 30rnd I did not find a Gen 3 20 round magazine from Magpul Inc. MAG243: 7.62x51/.308 20rnd magazines* *NOTE: NOT compatible with Armalite AR-10B, Noveske N6, Springfield Armory M1A, Rock River Arms LAR8, FN SCAR 17S or any other rifles that utilize M14, FN FAL, or HK 91/G3 patterned magazines.* If someone finds that I've made a mistake here, please feel free to correct me. Hope this helped. Last edited by Kimio; December 12, 2012 at 04:43 PM. |

Wow, these posts started off normal. then Kimio, just clarified it all. I mean, I was on the phone w/ some cabelas support tech or something, and they didn't really know anymore than I did. I'd write a letter of reccomendation for Kimio to Cabelas or Magpul, if he applied for head reorganizer for the tech support dept. Then some author named plouffedaddy comes along, and hes already made his own movie on some of this. Unfortunately I'm having an issue w/ my speakers, so I cant listen to it yet. This thread response worked out real well, thanks to the other two post also.

Cheaper than Dirt has its place, the same as any other business in a free market economy. And I can't fault them for jacking up their prices. When all the world wants a pony for their birthday, it's good to be the only guy with a pregnant horse. Just like they can't fault you or I when we cherry pick what is cheapest on their "shelves" or anyone else's shelves and shop from whoever gives us the best price.

I don't think anyone was faulting CTD, more amazed/shocked at the going rate for quality mags. Just an example of how drastic market changes can be given the recent tragedies.
