I'm wondering if the recoil is that much worse than the 9mm flip at the same weight as I seem to handle a straight back kick a bit better for a second shot etc. Does it hide ok in the front pocket?

It is a .45 short barrell gun so you should expect recoil.

I agree that the .45 and 9mm. have different types of recoil and at times the .45 recoil can be more manageable. However, a .45 in a package the size of the XDS will have pronounced recoil, even if its just pushing straight back.

The 45 moves twice as much bullet down the barrel. It is going to kick harder in the same size/weight gun.
These discussions on the recoil of service pistol cartridges (the hard-kicking.40 S&W) become irrelevant once you spend a little time with a 4" 44 Magnum or heavy-loaded 45 Colt. There are some things you can't 'mod' out of existence and recoil is one of them. If you intend to carry a substantial sidearm, you simply have to adapt to it and work toward mastering the gun.

I shot an XDS 45 at the range for a day. I hated it....we all thought the recoil was very bad. This after the Springfield rep told us that it shot like a 9mm....he was telling everybody in the store that. What a liar. I knew better but we rented it anyway because someone else wanted to try it. It also had some FTE's with the women shooting it....they simply could not hold on to it to allow it to cycle.

Don't care for them. Shot several in different calibers, I will say the 9mm was the best one. The .357 sig kicked the magazine out on every shot...as did the .40 (all full sized guns). Recoil was hardly noticeable though. Don't like the knock off glock trigger, or the exposed firing pin..okay I guess, just not my cup of tea. I'd just get a glock if I was looking at that kind of gun.

Superb ergonomics. A freind of mine had 105,000 rounds through his 9mm a couple of years ago when he let me fire it. The XD is the gun the glock could have been if they'd kept improving it.

Love my springfield XDs, I've been carrying it for more than 3 months now using the ETW iwb leather holster specifically molded for it I got from eBay for 45 bucks shipped. Disappears and very comfy.
I also have the Kahr PM9 and to me, xds has less recoil than the pm9 b/c it's lighter, xds has a beefy slide, both are very accurate at 10 yards deadly at 7, each gun have been shot more 1k times using 124 gr of zero fmj bullets+5.5 gr of power pistol for the 9mm and 230 gr WC bullets + 6.7 gr of power pistol all using picked up range brass and CCI primers, hot loads for sure, I shot both guns twice a week 50 to 100 rounds each session, benefits of being a reloader. Sent from the TARDIS using my Nexus 7 |
