Frank cannon revolver, 70s tv series?
I loved this fat tv detective as a kid, and wish the reruns would return. William Conrad was the actor. I cant remember if he carried a SW 36, or a Colt Detective, but it was a blue snub .38. Anyone know for sure?

Looking at the pictures I can find it looks like a Colt DS. Or a model 10 snub.

IIRC, watching the series back in the day, it was a Colt DS.

I can't remember, did Cannon like Steve Mcgarret (Hawaii 5 0) jump out of his car, draw his snubby 38 spl and blow out a tire at 100 yds.

MeTV had the "Cannon" series on just a few weeks ago. And like the OP I liked the series and watched it as a kid in the 70s. I think he had a dick special. Thats what it looked like to me.
I also like Jim Rockford "The Rockford Files" and have the complete set on DVDs. He also carried a DS when he totes a gun. I liked it on one episode when he gets his gun out of the cookie jar where he keeps it and the woman asked, "are you going to shoot them?" "Naw,you don't shoot 'em, you just point it at 'em." What great shows they had back then. Also Cannon had a phone in his car. Rockford had to use payphones but did have an answering machine.

I always liked the old TV detective shows and Westerns. Some folks wonder how come the hero never missed, but I explain about shooting ability, practice, and mainly that the script writer was on their side.

William Conrad was the RADIO Gunsmoke's Matt Dillon.
Wonderful voice for the part. He probably looked the part more than James Arness, too. More short tubby lawmen than tall, tall, lanky ones, I bet. Would have needed a longer moustache, though. |

Well, pictures don't lie. I thought I saw an ejector rod, but couldn't see it on the Youtube clips. Thanks Guys. Now I just hope they bring back the reruns!

Cannon used to look extra hefty to me when I was a kid, he looked like he was really giving the shocks on his Lincoln a work out.
![]() Now in 2012, he looks the same size as the average American standing in line at Cinnabon. ![]() As an aside, IIRC McGarret shot down a helicopter with his snub.

Conrad was not offered the job of Matt Dillon on TV because of his size. It was an interesting radio cast . Parley Bear of Keebler Cookie fame was Chester and Doc was Floyd the Barber from the Andy Griffith Show. I don't recall his real name at the moment.

Back in my younger days, I was saddled with the nickname "Cannon" when I reported to a new job, because one of my co-workers thought the TV character looked like me. They even produced a hard hat with the name on it for me.

Jack Lord was seen many times throughout the run of the original Hawaii Five-O carrying and using a Colt Detective Special, S&W Model 36 and even an M1 carbine. He was a rabid anti-gun owner in real life. Something of a hypocrite.
