S&W 66: More RBs or FBs?
Given two guns of identical age and condition, is one with a round butt more or less valuable than one with a flat butt?
Generally, the fewer guns made having a particular feature, the more valuable guns having that feature become. For example, a 3" barrel on a S&W M19 is (I've been told) more valuable than an M19 with a 4" barrel. With a model 66-3, does this concept extend to butt shape? |

4" and above are square butts, 3" and below are round butts.

There might be a few variations from special order runs but a casual glance at the book I don't see any. Quote:

My 4" 66, which I got brand new in the late 80s has a round butt.
But it wears a hogue goncalo alves square butt, so you'd never know. When I ordered it, I did not specify round butt and didn't like the looks. Rmocarsky |

All late production 66's had round butts. IIRC it started with the end of the 66-4 line and continued through the 66-8. Which were the final 66's, although they bore a faint resemblance to the original 66. Regards 18DAI

![]() So, I went and read the section on 66's and sure enough they went to round butts only starting in 1996 just before the MIM started. So yeah, I was wrong, at least as far as the late model 66's are concerned. In my defense, however feeble, I have no interest in late model S&W's and therefore do not keep track of them. That said, it appears all 3"er's are round butt. Jim |
