Stubborn stuck nipples etc

Got this in the mail this morning.

For all of you mechanic's and self doer�s out there. Recently �Machinist Workshop Magazine� did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and bolts that they �scientifically rusted� to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them. This is what they came up with:

Nothing: 516 lbs
WD-40: 238 lbs;
PB Blaster: 214 lbs;
Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs,
Kano Kroil: 106 lbs
Shop brew (50/50): 50 lbs.

This last �Shop brew� of 50% automatic transmission fluid and 50% acetone appears to beat out the commercially prepared products costing far more.

Now that...is useful.

I like acetone as a good solvent. Now I have to try it as part of "mechanic-in-a-can".

Been using ATF as a penetrating oil for many years. It's very high in detergents and acts as a very effective penetrating oil. Very effective on rusted/corroded parts especially when you can completely submerge the parts in a bath and let soak.

Have never mixed acetone with ATF but have mixed ATF and kerosine for use as a cleaner/penetrant many times.

Just keep in mind, formulators, that acetone is extremely volatile and flammable. It is also miscible with water. If you rinse a wet container with acetone and then discard the rinse, a little air blown into the container will dry it immediately. But the rinse must be safely discarded.

Thanks Tom. Been using ATF in a mixture for years, really keeps things nice and bright. Gonna try this mix, Kroil is $20.00 for a pint.
