price check: S&W 4506

I've been thinking about picking up a 4506 for a while now. Well I just went on gunbroker to look at prices and they were all over the place. So what is the normal price range for a 4506?

If you find a clean one that has use but not abuse and was not an obvious issued duty gun (those have extreme exterior wear) then I would expect it to be a steal at $400 and right in the ballpark at $500 and overpriced at $600.

My opinion, of course.

It really depends on where you are. The 4506 and 4506-1 have gained quite a following over the last two years.

Here in NC and generally on the east coast, you use to be able to buy a LNIB 4506-1 for around $450 to $500. These days a shooter grade 4506-1, with no box and one mag will usually run you $525 to $550 - IF you can find one.

The no dash 4506's run a little more than that.

On the west coast my LAPD friends tell me that a used 4506-1 will run you over $1000 and has been that way for over two years. The 4506-1 has experienced a resurgence as a duty pistol on the LAPD.

IMO, a clean 4506-1 with box and 3 mags is a deal at $600. Good luck! hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

I picked up one at a gunshow a couple of years ago (during the gun and ammo buying craze).

It's a 4506-1 that was a former police gun. It's scuffed up on the exterior, but otherwise in good condition.

I paid $389 total, IIRC. It came with one magazine.

I'd go out on a limb here and suggest that this nuggets says OH so much more about California than it does about 3rd Generation, .45cal Smith & Wesson pistols.

So far best I've seen is 599 and average about 700 or so some as high as 900 - 1200 for good condition

^^^ I'm with Sevens on this; a search of completed GB auctions reveals values that IMHO fall right in line with post #2.

Only the true LNIB safe queens sold for $700+. Most of the very nice shooters in VG+ condition are in the $450-$550 range, a few obvious former LE guns with glaring cosmetic flaws are around $400, and a few Exc guns that have been fired but have no appreciable exterior wear are in the $600+ range.

Keep in mind that California is it's own closed market.

Ive seen that range in local shops in my surrounding area and some on gun broker for that range. That higher range is mostly really good condition service pistols . As has been stated earlier the 500 - 600 is more common for used non service pistols that I've seen.

Again this is all personal observation over the course of the past 4 months or so since I've been looking for another one.
