Thermal Sights and/or Viewers

I can get away with buying either because my very girly girl wife LOVES finding critters in the woods. My only experience is with sights on crew served weapons. While seeing a tank two or so miles away is pretty awesome, that doesn't exactly translate to a sight to mount on an AR-15 or a viewer to wear or hang around my neck.

Does anyone have any civilian experience with these? Do you have any recommendations or warnings? How much do they cost?

Whether a sight or a viewer, I wouldn't be using it much beyond 100 yards.

No experience with them but it looks like they start at around $2000 and go up from there.
