You have gotten a ton of great advice. My two cents ill say stick with anywhere between 7.5 and 8.5 grains of Unique and a 240 grain lead bullet. I have dropped several deer and many hogs using 8 grains of unique with a 240 grain bullet. That load works great in my winchester 94 44 lever gun along with my smith 629 and taurus raging bull 44 mags. They are not wild on recoil but you know its there. Enough to enjoy and enough to hunt with at ethical pistol range.

Light charges of Unique under the 200 gr. xtp will work fine for lighter loads. 8 or 9 grains will get it out the barrel with enough zip to make it fun, but the recoil will be about 1/3 that of a full house round using H110. That should make it fun for your Dad and let his injury heal up at the same time.

Agree with Slamfire
I too have loaded both 8 and 8.5 grains of Unique but with a 240 grain Keith lead, bullet through my Ruger Super Blackhawk. It's a very pleasant load that doesn't break your wrist.

I picked up a SBH for my wife who can easily shoot a few hundred rounds of 9mm in a range session, but does not like the recoil or blast of my SBH with full power rounds. She really likes the SBH so we loaded a bunch of 180 gr lead over 7 gr of Trailboss and worked her up to 240 gr over TB, then 180 gr over 2400. She'll be shooting 240's over 2400 this year with no issues. TB is a great way to shoot all day without stressing the body.
