SIG P226
Had mine for several years and it just functions flawlessly, very soft recoil and extremely accurate!

STI has some excellent guns. A good start would be the Spartan 1911 or the Trojan 1911 in 9MM. Of course if you can spend a bit more, there's more to choose from in both their other 1911 and 2011 models.
I have the Spartan 5 in 9MM and it is a reliable and accurate gun. Lots of fun to shoot too! |

I'm liking my c9 rite about now...considering the fact that I spend most of my time shooting my 500 and Maverick 88

9mm Springfield XDm (but I'll admit that my 40S&W Baby Eagle all steel pistol is just as much fun!)

It all depends on how much you want to spend.
Why people are naming service pistols as the best range 9mm, I have no idea.

I really like my sig 2022 at the range
now with one caveat though I recently replaced the plastic guide rod for a custom stainless steel I noticed a difference I cant prove it but it shoots better now in my opinion. |

I dont think anyone has mentioned the HK P30. It has a pretty nice single action pull and with some trigger work its a really nice shooter. By far and away the most comfortable pistol on the market.

17L
I'll go with my 17L as my overall favorite with honorable mention to the springfield loaded 9mm and beretta 92. All 3 shoot very well but the 17L sight radius make 50-100 yard shooting a blast.
