Having a few family pieces myself, I would not modify it. As others have said, model 10s are easy to find, but theres not another model 10 from grandpa.

Family heirloom, that about says it all...you'll find, I think, that your tastes in hand guns will change over the years, but a gun that your grandfather owned and shot, is one to be treasured. Hang on to it, and don't alter it...Rod

top five things to skimp on to afford more guns:

Your internet connection--why should you subject yourself to the idiotic ramblings of others when you can be out shooting!
the kids' education--there won't be any jobs in the future anyway, why teach them unnecessary knowledge that will just get their hopes up?
auto insurance--you drive real good, you don't need it, the other guy has it anyway.
Deodorant--if they really love you, they won't care what you smell like.
Food--lets face it, you could stand to loss some weight.
