Stainless Sig

My LGS is selling a used P220 (CPO) in black they're claiming is stainless, not alloy.

The problem is that it looks just like the alloy. Is there any way of telling besides the "weightiness" of the frame without the slide?

I'd call Sig, but I found it Friday night and it's now the weekend.

You can probably use a magnet on the frame to check.

My Sig 1911 and my Dan Wesson Valor both have a duty coat that covers the frame and slide. Both are steel/stainless steel.

Sometimes you can see a definite difference in the texture of a steel versus alloy frame but it is not always easily detected.

When I bought my Sig 1911, I looked at the gun and asked the LGS if the frame was steel or alloy and they did not know.

We found a small magnet and it stuck to the frame. I bought it on the spot.

I much prefer steel over alloy.

I found this gun with a little help from Google. You may be disappointed.

I have not checked the Sig web site. They may have more information on that particular gun.

I Googled the Sig web page and found THIS!

I would snatch that up in a heartbeat. Sig DOES build a P220 in stainless and with a Nitron coat.

If that is what the shop has and it was not beat up, I would whip out my CC in a New York minute.

The weight difference should be very noticeable if they have a comparable model in alloy. Are you sure they are claiming the frame is stainless, not the slide? And if so what is there excuse for why the frame is black? I'm not aware of SIG selling stainless frame pistols with a black finish, but I could be wrong.

I think the idea is to lessen the glare. Sig makes several models in stainless steel with the black Nitron coating.

Here is a link to a P220 in black Nitron with stainless frame and slide.

Well, the magnet worked.

The P220 stainless, at least on paper, is about 8-9 oz heavier than the alloy.

It's 2.5 pounds unloaded.

Off to the range...
