Ruger SRH - needs rings

I bought a Ruger SRH w/out rings. What size do I need? I've read that the 30mm rings are preferred but I don't know why. I've seen both "medium" and "high". Anyone know what size are supposed to come with the gun? Thanks!

Moyer:

Scope rings come in one inch and thirty millimeter so you need to know your scope's tube diameter. Your scope's objective lens determines the rings' height. A phone call to Ruger will get you all the answers that you need.

Clifford is right. It depends on the scope you're going to mount.

30mm or 1 inch scope tubes are the most common. Some red-dot sights have oddball tube diameters, and therefore usually come with their own proprietary rings (and sometimes mounts).

Get a set of the Ruger factory rings. They came with my SRH when I bought it over 20 years ago, and I have no complaints.

The Ruger factory rings work best and are 1".

Looks like the rings directly from Ruger are over $80?

Would I be better off buying a flat mount like this for $60 and then I'd have the option of using the regular rings I already have or maybe a red dot in the futue?

Nothing wrong with that mount, and it give you a little flexibility in mounting an optic.

Mine are 1". Please notice that the front and rear are different heights, so be sure to get a matched set.

If it were me I'd just get the Ruger rings. It's a simpler, sturdier connection and puts the optic closer to the bore.

If you use the Ruger 30mm rings . . . the inside distance between them is only 1 7/8", so whatever tube red dot you get . . . The control group will need to be less than 1 7/8" long. The other option is to get the weaver mount unit that fits in your milled in ruger scope mounts. I just put a 30mm red dot on on my SRH. It took some looking to find a red dot tube with the right sized control group . . . but I like the Ruger rings better than the weaver system for strength and durability. I also have a 1" 2x6 scope, and it's easy to switch back and forth between the two, and I didn't have to remove my rear fixed sight, so if anything goes wrong . . . it only takes a couple of seconds to remove the red dot or scope and use the fixed sights.
