.250-3000, since it would be available in a Savage 99.

Another vote for the 6.5x55, I love that cartridge. I'll never be a one caliber guy though.

"This is not a practical exercise, nor is there any intended purpose behind the question. I'm just curious."

I actually did this...

Although I like to reload I was spending far too much time reloading and not enough on my real hobby, SHOOTING.

For me the .223R and .308W were "givens".

I've discovered the 6.5mm cartridges to be so versatile, I needed nothing else and SOLD ALL rifles other rifles (still have a 7X57 Mauser I plan to sell).

Replaced ALL of these other rifles/calibers/CARTRIDGES with a pair of 6.5mm cartridges.

The 6.5 Grendel for the AR-15 and the .260R for NON AR-15 rifles.

Doing this worked so good I did the same over .308W. This time the .45-70 was a "given" and sold everything in between.

Replacing all of these with a single cartridge, the .338-06.

There are "exceptions" to every rule. For me those are the M-1/1903 in .30-06, an Egyptian Hakim and K98 in 8X57mm and if I ever find one, a Savage 99 in .358W!

Figure with the .223R for varmints, I can hunt anything in the Western hemisphere with just these 2 rifles!

If I ever make it back to Africa to do more than just work I would be well armed for anything except dangerous game...

280 Remington.
Seeing that I own a 280 that's where I'll have to place my vote.
With manufactured loads the 280 will do everything the 270 will do, with handloads the 280 will do more.

Best Regards

I'm going to go with .243. I own a few rifles that number a couple of .22's, an AR in .223, a .325 short mag, a .450 Marlin and a pair of .243's. The .243's get more use than any of the others.

I would probably go with .260 Rem. if not that, a .270 WIN out of a Win model 70 featherweight.

"^^^I see the above votes for .308 and .30-06. Apparently, someone needs reading comprehension classes"

Either that are they think they are so smart they don't even have to READ the OP in the first place.

What a silly question! Why, of course I would choose 7X57!

7mm Weatherby

"ALL" is pretty broad. As such, 7mm Weatherby.

7.62x54r is my first choice, followed by 7.5x55 Swiss (GP11) if it qualifies.

I wonder if the OP would let me get away with choosing a 7.62x63?

Since you ruled out .223 and .308, either 5.56X45mm or 7.62X51mm.

Seriously now, .303 British, I'm a big fan of the Enfield platform.

Hmmmm are we picking a caliber or cartridge between the 223 and 30-06?

If we're picking a caliber? 284 or 7mm caliber for my favorite hunting rifle cartridge 7mm rem mag.Now if we're picking a cartridge between the 223 and 30-06? I'll go with the 280 remington.

Realizing you meant 'cartridge' and not 'caliber', I'd go with 7mm Rem Mag. I can load it from 7x57 velocities up to factory specs. It'll do anything a .243, 6.5x55, .270 or 7-08 will do. Felt recoil, to me at least, is no different than a .308, 30-06 or .270.
