Our Wal-Mart quit selling firearms about 3 years ago. Very limited ammo selection.

Wal-mart's here in western New York quit selling guns and have limited amounts of ammo. I asked a local manager about it and he said it's because of the State of NY's regulations and paper work involved.

Back when the so-called ammo shortage was bothering everybody I mentioned that I had a few openings in my next permit to carry class to the sporting goods mgr at one of my local wally worlds.

And that I gave discounts to vets and a few select other folks. Like him!

Funny, since then, not only do I get excellent service when I'm there, but also the occasional phone call advising me of the latest goodies.

Correction. I just learned that one Walmart in our area has just begun selling firearms including AKs and ARs.

Walmarts here in Vegas carry guns. I just assumed all Walmarts did. Learn something new everyday.

The carry what sells.

I'm no Walmart expert, but somewhere I got the impression (Sam's biography maybe) that they carry what sells well in the surrounding community. If they have something in the store that doesn't sell . . . they stop carrying it. I frequent two Walmarts that are about 35 miles apart. One carries a nice selection of shotguns and rifles. One does not.

The ones in the south carry hunting shotguns, rifles, and some even have cheap AR clones. I've also seen plinkers but never a handgun.

Ammo wise, they usually have a good selection... even carrying 357 SIG, and if you're nice to the clerk, they'll go to the back and give you a case instead of the one or two boxes they have on the display stand.

As far as I know, only Wal-Marts in Alaska sell handguns and such has been the case for many years.

I work at a walmart in tennessee and they pick where to sell guns by 2 main things will the guns sell if there in the store and how strict are the gun laws in the state also the only walmarts that are allowed to sell handguns now are the alaskan walmarts. And if your from some of the states with really strict gun laws you cant even go to another state that sells them i think there are 36 or 37 states from which we are allowed to sell firearms to residents.

Probably doesn't mean much coming from Wyoming, bu it IS our one liberal county. The Wal-Mart in Laramie, Albany County, has Wyndham Weaponry, Stag, Sig, DPMS ,Bushmaster, and Colt.

Whole lotta zilch in handguns.

Why don't they carry handguns? Too much paperwork?

They stopped the handgun trade years ago except for Alaska. I asked the manager of our local Walmart, and he told me that there are some pretty strong rumblings from Headquarters (which is only 45 min. South of here) that they are going to sell handguns again in selected areas. Primarily because there is a market and they can make some money. Some areas of the USA are just to much trouble to sell pistols in. Our local stores have long guns galore and huge amounts of ammunition. The ammo goes fast, they sell a lot of ammo at Walmart.

Walmart likes money. Guns+Ammo=$$$. For that matter, Ebay likes money, and doesn't like losing marketshare to Gunbroker. Thus, why they permit the sale of gun parts again.

The last time I saw a Walmart that carried handguns was in the mid 1990's. The political climate about guns was very different then and, I suspect, Walmart got out of the handgun business for fear that it would draw unwanted attention from certain politicians.

I'm in WNY as well, but the new Niagara Falls superstore keeps a pretty good supply of ammo. I've bought quite a bit there, and quite a variety. Not a bad hunting and fishing section either, considering it's a city store.

Bought a couple of shotguns at the Lockport store back in the day. No more.

As I recall, at least some Walmart stores got out of the firearms business shortly after the Columbine shootings, just to be PC.
Our newest store has a fair selection of rifles and shotguns. They're usually out of the ammo I'm looking for.

Local Wallys here all sell guns but usually are a bit more costly than our local Bi-Marts. Right now at Bi-Mart Ruger blue and wood 10/22s are $179.99.

I haven't been in the store in a couple of years, but the WalMart in Morris IL always had guns since they opened their doors. No great deals, but they did have guns.

If I get a chance next week,I'll pop in and check them out. They are over 50 miles from Chicago, though. I'd like to see if they carried MSRs there.

There is a Big R store, like Farm & Fleet right across the street. They carry ARs, handguns, and reloading supplies. I've never seen reloading supplies in any IL WalMart.

Ive been to walmarts in 4 or 5 diffrerent states while traveling for work. Most of the rural stores have firearms in them. Some of the stores around here that dont carry firearms have a display case of ammo.
I try to buy ammo from them for a couple of reasons. One, its reasonably priced, and two I want to support them purchasing it from them so it remains at their stores for purchase and in the "public eye".

How many of you are old enough to remember when Sears, JCpenny, western auto all sold firearms and ammo ? I can remember being 8-10 yrs old and Sears having a open rack of firearms unlocked and open to anyone to pick up and check over. Most anyone under the age of 40 has never seen anything like that nowdays.

Also any WM that has firearms has a big catalog behind the counter you can ask to look at and can order you almost any kind of firearm brand you want.

When I was in the Air Force in the early 90's the Wally World in Rapid City SD sold Handguns as well as a pretty good selection of shotguns and rifles.

I happen to live near one of the only Wally Worlds in IL. that sells firearms and ammo. They only have a small selection of shotguns and rifles as well as a limited selection of ammo. I went to a IA. Wally World when I was on a camping trip this past summer and they had a great selection of tactical shotguns and AR's. The salesperson told me they sell more firearms to IL. residents across the river than IA. residents.

As to the OP post "Walmart-likes Guns"? I say that they like money and could care less about the 2nd amendment. If gun sales were low then they would take them out of all of their stores. K-Mart removed all firearms and almost all ammo from their stores.
