Securing Your Gun in a Vehicle
Lately I have been leaving my CCW in my truck when I visit a place that is a gun free zone. I usually lock it in my glove box or center console. My dilemma is that it would not take much for someone to defeat these locks to get to my gun. Does anybody here use something else to secure your guns in your vehicle?

I've got a 10 by 8 little lockbox that slides under my seat. It's got a 3# combo and a steel wire that wraps around the leg of the seat. Only cost 35$ or so

+1 on the GunVault MicroVault. Mine usually stays under my car seat with the cable around the seat mount. It takes just seconds, though, to disconnect it to use in the house when I have company, or to take it into a hotel room, where the cable goes around the bed frame or something similar.

Bore-store, gun cases...
I live in a hot, humid environment 60-70% of the year.
When I'd carry my .40 pistol or .38spl revolver in my vehicle, I'd use a Plano or Docosil type case w/TSA type lock. If I were going to store a compact handgun for extended periods, I'd suggest adding a Bore-Store bag. This pad/treated cover can protect the weapon & is easy to access in a emergency. The lockbox or case may be secure, but the Bore-Store offers extra protection from scuffs, rust, damage. CF |

The great thing about the "Secure It" is that it can be used to meet the TSA rules when traveling by air. I have one in each of my cars and one permanently mounted in my suite case.

Here's another question, how about securing a rifle/shotgun or two when you have to run into a store to buy ammo or targets?
My idea was to use one of those long cable locks. Anything that can be secured inside a truck or car? |

Hey Chuckusaret, do you mean if I were flying to a state that is covered by my permit, that I could take my carry piece with me in my suit case? How does that work and how do you go about doing it? I imagine your suit case would have to be checked and you couldn't carry it with you on the plane...thanks! You can PM me if you want so we don't get off topic here.

I'm in a state where CCW in tough to get. I carry a double lidded combo lock box that has a carry handle like a small briefcase. My whole family knows the combo so a key is not required. I don't like key lockboxes because only the guy with the key can get the gun out! Pretty tough for the rest of the family...!
One side is locked seperatly from the other so I can keep ammo and gun separate. I don't like it, but it's the law. It's one step better than leaving home without it. |

I bought the stack on combo model from Academy $25 plus tax. I feel better already about securing my pistol in the vehicle if I need to.
Now if I can find one for a rifle or shotgun.

Secure-It for me, for a lot of years now. Great for 20 bucks.

Constantine Isn't that dangerous for your guns? leaving them in the hot car long hours each day? if I worked in a place wouldn't let me carry I just buy a gun only for cary duty (357 revolver) all metal, to avoid "melting" aka plastic guns. I rather just hook the gun, not the box. So if it got taken they have to break the gun [revolver open frame] to take it. I get heavy duty chains and a $20 lock or so.
The way my seats work are nice, I can stuff a rifle in them. I might get a Mosin Nagant just to say I have a "truck gun" then chain it to the frame of the car through the magazine port, so if someone found it and tried to take it. They gotta break the whole thing.

Might just buy a $200 mossberg 12g, get a folder stock, some heavy duty chains and a $10-$20 heavy duty lock. I think its a good idea to have a back up gun in the car as they say go to your rifle.

Another vote for the Gunvault Nanovault. In fact, I have two in my vehicle....one for the pistol & 2 extra mags and the other for 100 rds 9mm & extra mags (in case I go to the range afterward).
Only downside to the Nanos is that you're limited in gun size....I can only carry my XD9sc in it. If Gunvault would make a version that's two inches longer & wider and an inch taller, I'd carry a service-sized pistol in there.

I bought a Santa Cruz rifle trunk lock from sirennet.com, rather costly but works good. |

chuck - those are some really nice locks. It gave me some ideas of how I might be able to make my own. Not in a rush to buy one or get one made so I'll be looking and tinkering. Thanks for the input.
