Grail found....grail lost

Found one of my Holy Grails at a local gunshow today.
Daewoo MaxII imported by Stoeger. The rifle was in very good condition, complete with sling and 2 Korean mags.

Asked what the guy was looking to get out of it....."$750 if cash" (which is a great price)

I told him I'd have to hit an ATM, and was definately interested. Went out into the lobby to find the ATM out of service.
I returned to the guy's table, maybe 5 minutes later, to find him starting to pack up his stuff (this was about 12:30.)
I asked if he was leaving. he replied "I haven't sold anything all morning, I'm sick of wasting my time."

I asked if he could take a credit card... "NO!" he barked.

I asked if he would hang on for 1/2 hour while I hit another ATM..... "NO"

Even asked if I could put the $200 dollars I had as a deposit to keep him there til I got back... "NO"

I asked if he I could get his number and call him later about the rifle... "NO"

I can't understand it??
So disappointed right now.

I had it in my hand...then... gone for no good reason

I have half a mind to go back tomorrow just in case the guy has calmed down and returned.

Would have made a great B-day present to myself

Sounds like he was just having a bad day. I would try and go back see if he shows up again.

Speaking as an ex-salesperson, not selling can make people grumpy, and lots of people say things with no intention of following through. But an offer of a deposit would have certainly peaked my interest.

$750? Maybe someone told him what it was worth when you were gone haha.

Sorry for your loss

I think you found out the real reason he hadn't sold anything.

My thoughts exactly. Just my way of looking at this, why would you now want to do business with someone after they have treated you this way? Holy grail or not he doesn't deserve your money. I have stopped doing business with LGS because of bad attitudes from the other side of the counter. There loss and my gain.

Doesn't sound like he was interested in selling any thing.

I agree to a point, Don. I would normally say the same thing, but this was such a rare find at a great price that I could have overlooked his attitude.

It just sucks to be soooo close, then it just falls apart for absolutley no reason other than one man's bad attitude. It could have been win-win

I've had this happen to me for a number of reasons. For this reason I carry plenty of cash to gun shows. If I find something I'm really interested in, I negotiate a fair price (if I can) and pay for it.

Here's what happens. While you are looking at something, possibly talking price, there are others behind you and to the side of you listening. Some are silent, others will ooh and ahh while you are looking at it. Regardless of whether one of these looky-loos have any intention of buying the gun, if you don't wrap up the deal quickly, it emboldens the seller and he may look for reasons to no longer sell to you. This happened to me when I found a really low SN 1st Edition Colt Mustang (sporting real ivory grips). As soon as I asked the seller to show me the gun, there were 3 other people standing around, oohing and ahhing over this gun. I negotiated what I thought was a fair price, paid cash, shook hands and never thought twice.

Is this seller a regular at some of the other gunshows in your area?

If so, mayby you can catch him at one of them, mayby he will be in a better mood.

I have found that since I have more than one "grail gun" at one time, I am a much happier person!

I know what you mean.

I knew of some other guys who finally located their Grail, only to be turned away by all kinds of insults. Weird ones too... what kind of insult is "your father smelt of elderberries" anyway?

Fear not there is one on GB for 1400. Probably the dealer gave you the wrong price and got out of it.

Hmmm.... What's a Daewoo Max 1 worth? I know, not the Max 2, but you've got me curious if I'm sitting on a diamond in the rough....

The pre-94 ban Max 1 -Max 2 about the same as mentioned in price. The Max1 operates on a blow back system, very compact, and Max 2 uses a gas system like an AK. Max 2 is same as DR2000 which sell for around $700 with the HILLARY HOLE STOCK. put on an ACE folder and req. parts IT IS $1000.

I already own a DR200 with a few mods. But I've always liked the MaxII/AR100 because it is basically the same gun as the ROK's K2; with the folding clubfoot stock, flash hider and bayo lug. I keep an eye out, but had basically given up on finding one that I could really afford.

I have a shooting budddy that has coveted my DR200 for years and offered many times to buy it. My thought was that I could him the DR200 for the same price as the MaxII.

I don't recall seeing this guy at any past local gunshows. Even called the guy who was at the table next to him but he didn't know either.

Guess I'll just have to find myself another 40th B-day present. I was looking at a new motorcycle yesterday

They are sweet rifles. I think if you find one locally you won't have to pay near as much for it, well as you seem to have found.

What kind of mods did you do with your dr200? I have seen some people put on those ace side folders, and they look pretty nice.

I've had my DR200 since the mid 90s.
Soon after I bought it, I swapped to an ACE fixed stock/pistol grip kit, (which included all the .922 goodies)
Stormwerks rail mounting a Primary Arms M3 clone
And the best improvement has been the DRP 90 degree safety.

I love the rifle, and it has been reliable as an anvil for 9-10k rounds of everything I've fed it

That is quite a nice looking rifle. I wouldn't feel bad keeping that one around at all. I'm sure you will find another AR 100 at a price you like, but the rifle you have right now is pretty darn good already.
