S&W 41 bad factory repair

New S&W mag in just factory-rebuilt mod 41 won't stay latched. Pops out with each shot. Using my old mag, I get "fail to extract" jams. S&W quality has gone to hell? Any idea why mag would cause fail-to-extract?

Call S&W and tell them the problems you're having.

Typically, extraction problems and magazines seldom have much to do with each other -- but I'm sure there are exceptions. (I've heard some strange stories about High Standard [.22] magazine-related malfunctions told by guys who are very experienced shooters and who know the HS guns. So, this may be something similar.)

The mag NOT staying in the grip -- if the other mag doesn't drop out when used -- suggests that the new mag is defective.

There is a fundamental difference between High Standard .22 magazines and most other .22 mags (including the Model 41) in that the H.S. pistol does not have a typical feed ramp and relies solely on the magazine design to escort the round into the chamber. I think that some of the "strange stories" that are told concerning H.S. magazine-related malfunctions relate to this design quirk.
I would agree that either the magazine is defective (easy to diagnose if other mags work fine) or the magazine catch spring or the catch itself is out of spec.

Mag does same thing in my son's 41. S&W just sent me a Fed Ex label to send gun back to them. I had thought they would look at it if I paid to send it back.

I doubt the service people at S&W care who paid for shipping.

I can't diagnose problems like that by remote control, but in most cases where a magazine won't stay in a pistol with that type of magazine catch, it is due to the catch slot in the magazine being tight. Often a single pass with a file fixes things.

I had a temporary problem with my S&W 41 not holding magazines. It turned out that the magazine release button had unscrewed a bit. When I tightened it up, the magazines stayed secure. Quick fix. You might check and see if this is the problem with your 41.
