Can you send someone a gun via USPS or UPS?

Edited. Tmui.

So can he send me a gun from Ohio to Florida or is that illegal?

I really appreciate any answers. I figured this is a good place to ask, but if not, I apologize.

Thank you.

First off, any gun sent interstate needs to be sent to a local FFL holder to be transfered to you. You will need to fill out a form 4473, pay a transfer fee, plus anything else your state laws require. Transfer fees are usually $20-$30 or so, but can be higher in some locations.

Now, for the actual mailing, long guns (shotguns and rifles) can be sent through USPS. Handguns cannot, they must be sent UPS or FedEx and the rules from these companies require it to be sent overnight, which is not cheap. It's usually cheaper for the sender to find an FFL holder who's willing to ship for a fee it as they're able to use USPS ground.

It would be a violation of Federal law if he ships the firearm directly to you.
Interstate transfers of a firearm require shipping only to a licensed dealer.
Go here to find a licensed dealer in your area. http://www.gunbroker.com/FFL/DealerNetwork.aspx
Note that transfer fees vary widely.

Have your father read this first:

Oh, my goodness. That is all much more than I want him to have to bother with. Filling out government forms is not his favorite thing to do, lol. I don't even know what a FFL is.

I'll just go buy my own.

Thank You so much.

Where does it say anything about your father filling out any forms?
An "FFL" is a licensed gun dealer.

And besides, YOU will be the one filling out the forms... which you'll be doing if you buy a gun from a dealer anyway.
