Econo Can

Has anyone on TFL actually tried an Econo Can, the suppressor made from an oil filter? How well does it compare to other manufactured supressors? Any accuracy concerns? Any safety concerns?

I'd just buy a regular one. The fact that it wears out after a few thousand rounds and is basically non serviceable would make me want something else.

Wears out? The oil filter or the threaded adapter?

I must say, the thing seems useless to me, as it's taller (the oil filter part) than the sights or even a scope on practically any gun but it sure is cheap.

I'd buy one in a heart-beat if it weren't for the $200 fee. It would be $75 worth of fun but it sure isn't $275 worth.

Ok, that's what I thought.

Why would that matter, if the companies claims are true, the adapter is the silencer and the filter is a $4-$10 uncontrolled, replaceable part.

You could replace it every 50 rounds and it would be thousands of rounds before it added up to a "real" silencers cost.

I'm not sure. As of 1986, "silencer" is legally defined as:

any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for
use in such assembly or fabrication.

My worry is that the oil filter is the part that does the suppression, therefore it would seem to be the part that needs to be registered. The ATF's website also states that "replacement parts are 'silencers' as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(24) that must be registered and transferred in accordance with the NFA and GCA."

I would share that worry, unless I saw an ATF statement.

The company appears to disagree, but it wouldn't be their butts in court either.

I believe a video of their's says the filter and adapter are considered the silencer and you cannot replace the filter yourself.

I'd buy one for sure if you can legally change the filter but I'm pretty sure you can't. I'd rather save up for a real silencer.

So you can't change the filter yourself and they recommend that you shoot a .22 through it first... So if I'm planning on using it on a 9MM or something else, I also need to have a .22 configured to be able to shoot it as well. No thanks.

I know a guy who owns one. He told me the adapter it the registered suppressor, the oil filter is disposable, the same as an old tech can with wipes. The wipes are just a disposable part.

Actually, the ATF recently sent a letter out clarifying that. According to the letter:

Replacement of any component or component parts of a registered silencer, other than silencer wipes, would be a violation of the NFA if performed by a non-licensed manufacturer.

The manufacturer offers to repair the filters for a nominal fee, but if the user thinks he can just chuck the filter and replace it with an off-the-shelf one, he could end up in jail.
