Daniel Defense equal to Colt ?

Colt seems to have the traditional vote, but they seem a lot more available than Daniel Defense rifles.

I can find a Colt just about any day on my local used rifle listings, but Daniel Defenses are never there.

I was looking at the Colt 6920 SOCOM... not sure why it is so much more than the other 6920's.

Googling around, I see a strange obsession with Colt "roll marks" with people wanting the M4a1 marking or at least, the LE mark.

I think the SOCOM may have the m4a1 mark, nicer hand rail, but not sure about what else if anything.

BCM, DD, LMT, all equal to Colt.

I'd agree with Blackops... Colt makes quality ARs, but they're hardly the only ones doing so.

The thing about DD is that most of their rifles come with their rail systems, so they're really not cheap (DD rails are very good quality, but they are spendy).

Thanks

Given that the Colts seem so much more easily available.... and probably the fact that most of the photos of them seem so tactically "uncool"... just plain plastic handguards and all.... they give the impression of being an entry level rifle.

It's just an impression, of course.

By contrast, Daniel Defense is enjoying an excellent marketing campaign.

I believe Colt lost the contract to provide M4 to the military, hence the have a wee bit more production capabilities to crank them out to everyone else.

Part quality is about the same. Personally the DDs seem to have better fit and finish. I saw a batch of Colts 6920s that had burrs on all of the triggers.

Everybody can have issues once in a while. I built a rifle using a DD LPK, and the fire control group had issues. It ended up as a release trigger- it would fire when you pulled the trigger, but the trigger wouldn't catch the hammer from the disconnector when you released the trigger.* Some part swapping showed it to be an issue when that particular trigger was mated to that particular hammer... they worked fine when put with others (the hammer was fine with another trigger and vice versa). DD swapped the entire fire control group without a problem (I wasn't sure exactly where the issue lay, or even if it was just funky tolerance stacking, but I wanted a known good complete FCG in that thing), so they took care of things, but even Daniel Defense can do an oopsie.

But yeah, be it for parts or complete rifles I'd put DD right up there with Colt and everybody else.

*Note: all this was discovered when doing the usual round of function checks. This is why you do function checks... so you don't get nasty surprises when you shoot it with live ammo.

Yes they can.

I had 2 of their fixed rear sights. One of the had the aperature installed backwards.

Everyone makes mistakes.

What sets companies apart is how they handle the mistake. (I actually didn't like the way that DD handled it, but they did fix it.) I sold them and went with Larue.

Technically that is true. Colt owns the AR trademark. If it has AR on it, it has to be a Colt.

It's interesting that Colt lost the latest M4 contract to Cerebus...

Colt does offer a LE6920 R that comes with all the Magpul goodies as well as Troy rails on it.

DD, LMT, BCM, all make rifles equal to Colt.

The reason Colt lost the Contract for the M4 is price, Colt was charging $1300 for a M4A1(RAS, buis, sling, mags) Remington offered $678.50 per rifle.

Colt still owns to TDP though so Remington has to pay colt a 5% fee for every rifle they make and sell to the military.

Also since Colt still owns the TDP Remington can only use the TDP for military rifles they cannot use it on civilian rifles.

Daniel Defense has the same or better quality of components and superior customer service than Colt.

I have a Daniel Defense (below) and three Colts.

What model of Daniel Defense is that?

I'm thinking about getting a v3.... but the PWS Mk114's have my attention, too.

I own a Colt AR15A3(the exact model number escapes me, as I'm far from home), and I have just one complant. The trigger pins are an odd size, so putting a nice trigger in the rifle is a pain.

That's it.

My anal retentive machinist brother (who hates "black guns") went over the rifle for several hours, and made me promise that if I ever sold it, he had first shot.

Earlier this year I sold off all of my junker AR's (three of them) with the intentions of replacing them with quality rifles. My decision was narrowed to Daniel, Colt, and Noveske. Noveske was just a little more than I wanted to pay, and DD had Colt whipped in all of the hand to hand comparing I did. I ended up building a V3 with a complete upper and a DD LPK in a stripped lower that I had and then I bought a DD M4V7. I don't think there is any doubt as to the quality of DD being top of the line, and I wouldn't trade either of mine for Colt at this point.
