i know the feeling you must have experienced when you gave him the rifle.

I experienced the same when I gave my son a custom 03 with a hand checkered stock, trigger and match barrel.

Am I a "good dad?"

Your love, compassion, guidance, accasional admonision, hugs, play, smiles and always being there for his/her needs makes you a good dad. Teaching your child safety first, and caliber by age in a safe environment gives him/her a trust in you for thinking of that. Not knowing the age, it is an age specific decision. Careful on the big gun experience for a young child. He/she will grow into thier preference. That's why they made the .22 cal.
