Are coyote pelts worth anything?

I was at a garage sale today and they were selling coyote pelts for $75.00

I was thinking there must be a lot of people who would let me shoot coyotes on their property for free, especially when the cows are dropping calves, but I see them for sale on the Internet between 80 and 110 bucks.

probably........and marketing them. Around here one would be lucky to get $20-$25 bucks from a fur buyer for a raw hide in it's prime with little damage from gunshots. Most folks render them worthless if they do not know how to skin them properly. Take the whole animal to the buyer and he may give you $15. Then the buyer needs to sell it to for a profit. This low cost is why many get left in the field. I know several yote hunters that can skin a yote in the woods from a tree or a fencepost in ten minutes. It's not a get rich quick proposition, but it does help pay for gas and ammo.

I have sent several Coyote skins in to be tanned. These are hides which were properly skinned but not fleshed. I believe the cost for tanning and fleshing was around $60 plus $20 shipping. This did not include the cost of me shipping the frozen hide to the tanner. I think it took 3-4 months to get my hides back. So you see, $75 is a pretty good price if the hide is in good shape and you want one. My hides were tanned for clothing and were just a loose fur similar to your E-bay link. They were not made into clothing, but were given away and used as decorative items.

I haven't skinned a yote for about 30-35 years, but we used to get about $100 for them. Then PETA hit and the prices dropped so low it wasn't worth it.
I believe the prices have recovered some from what I hear, but I haven't tried to sell one myself lately.

In Texas they are under state wide quarantine for rabies.

For all the time and energy it takes to skin, flesh, and tan a coyote hide... $75 is a good deal IMO.

I'd charge at least $120. If I had a fleshing machine, I could probably do ya one up for $100.

Last time I checked, a coyote hide was worth about $20.00.
I hate the stinking creatures.
I wouldn't skin one if you paid me $20.00 just to skin it.
If I kill one I leave it lay.

It depends on where the coyote comes from.
I read one article where a guy trying to debunk the thought that location having an effect on the value of the fur and mixed in some southern coyote furs in with some northern furs at an auction. All furs were prepped the same by an experienced fur handler. ALL of the southern furs were sorted out. Some were purchased at a considerably lower price then the northern furs and most were not purchased at all.
A norther(Canada) coyote fur can bring as much as a few hundred bucks when handled properly and during the middle of winter when it is all furred up.

The majority of furs here in the US would be in the $20 - $30 range up north and $7 to $12 in the south.
Of course that price is at the buyer, handled perfectly and not tanned.

If it is a nice tanned northern fur you saw at the garage sale for $75 I think that would be a decent price.

Locally we just had three confirmed rabies cases. A fox and two coons.
While the quarantine may not prohibit the sale of fur, I would think twice about it.

The local taxidermist was paying ten bucks unskinned - he'd rather do it right himself than have somebody screw it up - but now he only gives $5. I'll only shoot them if the opportunity pops up. Not worth it to go hunting for 'em specifically.

I don't want no coyote icky cooties on me neither. Some have quite beautiful coats BTW, but not worth it.

I guess they delouse them and kill the fleas and mange and everything else, but I still wouldn't want a coyote fur.

Do the Northern ones have fuller healthier fur?

The coyotes I've seen running around the Chicagoland suburbs have patchy fur - they do look like they have mange, ugly el chupacabras.

Nothing uglier than a coyote with mange. But chupacabta sightings go up equally to the rate of mangy coyotes.

Get somewhere around 20 for them, right now the price will be lower as they are starting to shed, prime pelts come in late fall and the winter. Here is a good reference on skinning them

Thanks for the heads up! I always thought the bounty on coyote's in Utah was an urban legend. It was something my fellow hunters would talk about but nobody could ever confirm. It was all heresay. So, I decided to google it.

Apparently there was a $20 bounty per coyote in most counties. But as of the 2012 legislative session it was upped to $50! (statewide?)

I think it's time to pick up coyote hunting...

I get average of $20 for yotes at my furbuyer. He skins and dries the pelts and sells at an auction where he gets $35 average per pelt.

I would rather take a round of 50BMG to the foot than a 22short to the base of the skull. all 21 of my guns are 45/70 govt 357 mag, 22 or 12 ga... I believe in keeping it simple
