I'm new here so forgive me if this isn't in the right section or has already been asked.
Recently I went to Delaware and saw BB Guns on a shelf. I decided to get one without ever considering the laws in my home state of New Jersey. I began reading about bb guns and read that they're considered firearms and you need an FID card to purchase them in NJ. Which, I don'

t have....should I apply for and FID? Will it be legal then, or do I need to register it or anything? I've read that you do and since its a pistol its treated like real one. Im honestly lost. I've read so many things, I don't what's true or not. Sorry this is so long!

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with all the crazy laws in NJ. But in NYC and that's only in the city and not the state, it's just plain illegal and if not already registered, is concidered contriband and can never be registered. I know that what you did was just an innocent mistake. For cry'n out loud it's just a stink'n B-B gun, but if it's illegal the authorities in great polluted state of NJ will practically tar and feather you if they're given the opportunity.

You should be able to check out the laws of your state on the internet, but B-B guns may just be prohibited in certain jurisdictions and not yours. I'd never advise you to do something that's not legal, cause I wouldn't want you to get into trouble, but someone else might suggest you put it away and not show it to anyone, cause kid you might shoot your eye out. Whatever you do be careful and good luck.

Yes, you need and FOID to purchase an air rifle in NJ. The NJSPS believes that requiring this will prevent terrorists from acquiring these deadly weapons and using them to overthrow the government. It may also be that the NJSPS wants to make sure than no one uses one of these WMDs to make an ouchie on one of their super troopers.

As a NJ resident

for a short time left, and a retired LEO, who now works in a gun shop, let me try to help here. You should apply for a FOID from your local police dept or NJSP. DO NOT mention the BB gun, and once you have your FOID, in about 3-4 months, you are legal. You dont need to register the BB gun, but you should always have your FOID in your posession when you are shooting it. In NJ you dont have to fill out a 4473 for BB gun, just state certificate of eligibility. You will be ok, and someday you too can move from the socialist republic of NJ, to the USA. If you have any other questions, just ask, Ill try to help as much as I can.

Would getting the FID be any different if the the bb gun is a pistol? According to the NJSP, you need a permit for each handgun you get, even if Its a bb gun handgun. Would that change anything with getting the FID?

No you still need the FOID, but you should be careful with the BB gun if it is a pistol, even get rid of it, because that is a felony in NJ. The NJSP is correct, you need a permit for every pistol, and trying to register it after the fact will only bring you a charge here in NJ. Sorry, it sucks, but that is the way the NJSP is.

Good grief!! A felony to own a b-b gun!!! Move!! I got out of Jersey a long time ago, never missed it for a second and wouldn't go back on a bet ... We're still free to own and carry firearms here in the Republic of Texas and in many other fine states of the union ... just pick one ...

that is the crazy thing about NJ, bb pistol and black powder pistol are treated the same as a 14 shot 9mm pistol. Obtaining a handgun without a pistol purchase permit is a felony in NJ, and getting the gun, and then trying to register it will only get you a charge from the NJSP. The only way around that is to have legally purchased it while living in another state. 2nd amendment doesnt apply to NJ, nor the rest of the constitution.

Actually, if you search the medical data bases, you can come up with some poor soul who took a BB in the temple and died or had one enter a blood vessel and sail into their brain's system and shut it down.

By the way, the history of slingshot banishment in NJ began with a bureaucratic error. Seems that a clueless someone, in a sterile windowless office designed for writing regulations in Trenton, decided that illegal "slungshot," a weight in a sock or end of a rope, should be spelled "slingshot" and thus began the criminalization of slingshots.

Are classIII weapons still allowed in Jersey where BB guns are so restricted? If that's the case then the scale of justice is rock'n and roll'n. Full auto is a no no in NY and the dirty little secret is some elitists are allowed to possess them very quietly, but as bad as this state is there are many more advantages to living here than there.

No, class3 firearms are not permitted in NJ. There is a permit process, but there has never been a permit issued. Silencers, and fully auto firearms are defacto banned in NJ.

My memory's kinda burnt out, but I thought I recalled many years ago a well known secretary to the President, I think Nixon, or Ford, had resigned his office and was leaving for NJ. He had a classIII weapon and had said where he was going and that he'd be allowed to keep it. I was sure it was Jersey, but unless things changed from since the '70's I was mistaken.

I guess I should be understanding of people dumping on NJ on a shooting website. After all we are definitely in the top 3 if not the single worst when it comes down to firearm law. But I own properties in 3 states, I call NJ my home and love it. I am from S NJ which you should understand is a different state than N NJ. Some of the countries best fishing, beaches, hunting, shooting ranges, not to mention the diversity of fantastic food. Yes the taxes and gun laws absolutely suck. But, I wouldn't live anywhere else. Waiting 4 weeks for a permit to buy a BB Pistol is worth living within 30 minutes of the Atlantic ocean and not having to watch out for poisonous snakes when you walk in the woods. Just my $0.02 on a old thread.

I'll keep my no snow FLA and I'm 3 miles by road to the Atlantic Ocean and can walk out of any store selling firearms with any thing I can afford that is not tax stamped by the ATF.

NJ does a pretty thorough job at trampling our gun rights. But they make up for it by taking all our money so we cant afford guns anyway.
