At the risk of being tiresome, I'll repeat my initial observation -

Quote:
Unfortunately, the various uses of the word headspace seem to be embedded in the vernacular and refuse to be rooted out...

Considering this, I can only advise that the new reloader read carefully and try to determine what the context is. Sometimes, the dimension itself is an aid to determining what is being described.
Since language can be inexact, and because bad habits are hard to break, I will simply suggest that the term "headspace" be treated somewhat loosely, until the reader can figure out the writer's intent.

There is, without doubt, a valid definition of headspace (as has been explained above, by several), and there also appears to be some inertia involved in getting that definition universally accepted.

There are also correct terms for the dimensions for which "headspace" is incorrectly applied, but these have their own inertia.

So, perhaps we can't fix it, but we can all agree that it is well and truly broken...

Well said. I well understand the reluctance (refusal?) for some to use established words and terms for anything. There's some folks out there who insist a rifle or shotgun barrel length's measured from the chamber mouth to the muzzle 'cause that's how far the stuff it shoots travels down the bore and shot out from it.

And I like that one. Seems like a good note with which to recognize the thread has run its useful coarse and the OP probably has more than he needs for practical purposes. If anyone thinks it needs to be reopened for further useful contributions, PM me.
