Pedersoli Quigley 45-90, Black powder only?

The Pedersoli Quigley in 45-90 is marked "Black Powder Cartridge Only" on the bottom flat of the barrel forward of the nose cap. Is this a must or is it a recommendation? I read that people are loading smokeless powder for this gun. Is there BP and smokeless variants to this rifle? I would like to load Accurate 5744 and 535 Postells in it. Advise welcomed. Thank you.

It is a modern made cartridge rifle that is able to fire smokeless powder as well as black powder.

If Black Powder only is permenantley engraved on the weapon there can be no doubt that is what the makers want you to use.
1. The gun may be safe to use with smokeless powder.
2. If the gun developes a fault smokeless will find it.
3. If it can be proved you used smokeless you will have a hard job claiming against the company. If you want to use smokeless get a different gun.

If you go to Pedersoli's website and find the user manuals you will find they are rated for 29,000 CUP/PSI with smokeless powder.

Presuming Hawg is right and I'm sure he is, you must make sure your loads don't go over that pressure. A very small amount of smokeless gives a relatively large increase in pressure. Take care if you load your own.

I can determine velocities by using my chrony. I have not looked it up yet but is there a formula to determine cup based on the knowns?

I found this on another forum. I haven't checked my manuals.

Lyman shows the Winchester 45-90 with a 385 grain #2 alloy bullet with 61 grains of H322 giving 2134 fps at 25,900 CUP.

The bottom half of the following page talks about the limitations of shooting Pedersoli guns with smokeless loads. It's recommended to only use loading data supplied by powder manufacturers or in loading manuals that list the pressures. That way only trusted and verified loading information is being used.
