wolf hunting tips
now that all of the other hunting seasons have wound down and ended I find myself looking forward to the only hunt that will be open in north central Idaho on january 1st:
GRAY WOLVES!!!!! I know where they are thick as fleas but I'm afraid I know little of how to get them to come to me. I have the location I have the gun I need the tactics. does anyone have any pointers for hunting these buggers? unless they made ammendments to the states baiting laws it is illegal to bait anything other than a bear so that is out of the question. thanks in advance for all the help.

To hunt Coyotes we use camo and electric calls. As a Wolf is just a bigger canine, with more attitude, you might try a Screaming Rabbit or a Yowling Domestic Cat Call and see what shows up? Sit well down wind and use as much cover as you can.

..........according to many here @ TFL, one does not need to actively hunt for wolves. All one needs to do is to go to the woods and wait for them to come and get you.
![]() Me, I'd spot and stalk in areas I knew held wolves, and if that wasn't producing, I'd try a fawn distress bleat or puppy distress calls. |

Wolves learn fast, once they have been hunted the sound of a motor running will move them out of an area. They will respond to a wolf howl in their territory, if you haven't given yourself away.

Cover ground as quietly as possible , looking for fresh sign.Follow up if you can or just try howling to see if you can get a rise.If your in their territory they may come to escort you out.

When they are new to an area you won't hardly ever see them. Once they have established themselves they progressively get bolder. We now have them chasing deer by us RIGHT next our blinds. One guy, after walking in to his blind in the dark on opening morning, had one howling not 50 yards from his stand. I would suggest a howling call. They usually answer it if around and might come in to that. Other then that you won't bait them or call them in to animal calls. They're alot smarter then most other animals. I got this info from my BIL who is a retired DNR biologist (and a-hole). I've also read many articles from the authors who really know about these things and this is pretty much how it works. And if you're not sure if it's a wolf, they run with their tails straight back. Good luck!
