Major Dave,

If you would, let me know how it works out. I haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to...and one of these days I will, when life slows just a bit for me.

I got them loaded

five rounds each @ 10.0 grains, 11.5 g, 13.5 g, and 15.0 grains.

Now I need to go shoot them to see which load groups best. Will chronograph them, too. Always curious about velocity. Also helps me calculate trajectory at different distances.

Will probably be Monday afternoon before I can get to the range.

Too many deer hunters at the range this weekend, getting ready for the Nov 6 opener.

For those unfamiliar w/ Trailboss--

Take a one pound Hodgdon black powder container. Most Hodgdone are packaged 1# in that black jar.. Trailboss will fill it to the same fullness w/ a mere 9 OUNCES. The 8# jug will only hold 5# of trailboss.

Range Report

Fired all 4 loadings, and my rifle (a Win Mod 70 short action carbine - push feed) LOVES the 11.5 load!

Three hole cloverleaf you can cover with a dime - @ 50 yards.

The 13.5 grain load was almost as good. The other 2 loads were obvious losers.

Didn't get a chance to set up my Chrony - too many deer hunters sighting in.

Next step is to load 10 rounds of 11.5gr and 13.5gr, then shoot 5 of each thru the Chrony, and verify the scope zero, get velocities, and verify which load groups best.

Then I will shoot 5 rounds of the load which groups best, @ 100 yards, so I can establish how much hold over to use (50 yard zero) for shots beyond 50 yards.

Thanks for the update, Major Dave! Sounds like you're getting it figured out pretty well.

I'm gonna have to start playing with trail boss in my .243 (also a Win 70, although mine's a pre-'64 standard action). I've wanted to do it for a few years now, but just haven't gotten 'round to it.

Hope you'll keep us updated with the continuing results.

2D Range Report

Chrono says:

11.5 grains of Trail Boss, has MV avg 1,562 fps, with hi/lo of 55 fps
13.5 gr..................................avg 1683.........................11....

Accuracy is still a tie. Will load and shoot 20 rds of each for next range session(s). Will require 2 range sessions because I only have 20 pieces of brass in that lot.

Recoil is minimal, barrel heat is almost non-existent, and the "hot" brass pops out of the chamber at barely body temperature. Very mild loads, indeed. Could probably reload that brass 100 times with no brass stretch and no case failures!

It depends on your state game laws but here in Texas a 22rf is legal. Like a previous post I use a Remington 40X w/ match ammo and do head shots only. Either a dead bird or a complete miss. I no longer download the larger calibers as I had one round to go k-boom on me and once was enough.
